Converting my truck to proper AWD

I understand that my truck isn’t a SyTy but I am borrowing a lot of the technology from those trucks for my build. I’m working on an LS swapped 51’ Chevy Five Window truck that’s currently on an S10 chassis. I’m using a lot of SyTy parts to convert my truck into an AWD twin turbo Track Truck. I just ordered a custom limited slip front diff, axles and the output shaft is need to do this from John Frey there at @BullyRacingLLC . Parts should be here in a couple of weeks so that the build can all come together.

I want to do this same build to 1949 Studebaker Champion Convertible. I can't wait for the pictures and the build info; I want to know what I am up against? Looks amazing!

The custom built front diff from @BullyRacingLLC just came in and looks like a nice piece of jewelry. It’s got a true limited slip carrier with 3.73 gears and a solid passenger side axle. The custom output shaft for the transfer case and adapter plate should be here in a couple of days. This will enable me to run the 4L80 tranny with the 4472C and be a TRUE AWD truck. Pics and updates coming soon 🙏🏽ED8C0903-5D79-46EF-84FB-B36814660AD0.jpeg

TurboCharlie and QWERTYphoon,

Well, we are pretty close in our purposes in that my ride also is a bastard clone of grand proportions.

My 1950 Studebaker Champion is sitting on a 1986 S10 4WD - standard cab/long bed - frame where eight (8) of the body to frame bolts lined up perfectly. My engine is old school rather than "New School LS," being a built 1975/76 Cadillac 500 CID bored 0.050 over for a total of 511.5 CID. Being greedy I round it off to 512!

The engine had enough compression to bark when run on the break-in stand, so much so that it will be interesting to see if the E85 fuel, plus water injection will be enough to cover the anticipated 18 pounds of boost from the mid-mounted twin Garrett 3782 turbochargers.

Running gear includes a refreshed front differential, GM 4L85E transmission, backed by a low mileage but rebuilt NVG 149 AWD transfer case from a 2003 Silverado. The rear is a Ford 8.8 IRS unit from a 1995 Thunderbird SC. It has been bolstered with a Torsen limited slip unit. Both front and rear diffs have 3.08 gear ratios as the expected prodigious torque should be more than enough to be interesting.

I wish you both well with your projects!

You was able to fit the NV149 under your car? I’d love to see some pics of you have any available. I was contemplating the 149 but didn’t think it would fit.

Yes, everything fit ultimately, but space underneath was still going to be at a premium. I'll post some pictures in the next day or two.

The big change came when I got tired of trying to accommodate the torsion bars and their large crossmember anchor. Getting that heavy sucker out was a chore. I hammered, squirted with every lubricant and rust dissolver on my shelves, but finally took a 4 inch cutoff wheel to convince whatever was unwilling to move. That done, I was able to use the factory transmission-to- transfer case mount, rather than trying to build something for a divorced transfer case. Luckily there was a like new set of coil over shocks on Ebay at a killer price, so those along with buying a set of appropriate springs made it a done deal! The side benefit was a significant weight sayings!!

Question: is there a limit on picture sizes here?

I removed the torsion bars when I had the truck stripped to a bare chassis to clean and paint. I got tubular upper/lower a-arms and coilovers. Was you able to run coilovers with the stock a-arms? I didn’t see how they’d fit. Can you PM me and I’ll give you my cell number if that’s ok.
