Here is a post
"The tranny swap cost less than $1000 for me. Less than one 700r4 rebuild. When you do things the right way and you do alot of it yourself, it doesn't cost that much. "

Being this is not a realistic amount to swap over to a 4L80-E trans
I would like to know what a trans shop/mechanic would really cost to completely change over to a 4L80-E?
My guestimates put it about $5000.00? That is for labor, controller, adaptors propshaft etc.
Lets really here what it costs.
Not just a parts break down.
I'm talking w/labor & all total.
Does anyone have an actual invoice?
Not some break down of buddy buddy prices, etc, ya know what I'm sayen?

"Ferrari" :tup:

I had posted this a while back (10-11-2005 5:54pm)

JS Manufacturing kit 1,200-1,500
Hughes converter 800-900
TCI controller 650-700
Labor for tranny work 230
Front driveshaft 400-450
Rear shortened etc 80-90

Those are really rough guesses but thats the ballpark.
I did all of the install myself. the labor for tranny was just to have the new output shaft installed, and the rest of the tranny "looked over" to make sure it was ready for the task. BTW the i aquired the 4l80E as a "freebee"

regardless, there is NO way i would go back to a 700. there is NO way i would waste one penny on upgrading a 700 if a) your making serious horsepower or b) you just beat the shit out of your truck on a regular basis and even though the 4l80e costs more than a th400, there is no comparison in driveability. overdrive and lockup??

this has by far been one of the best upgrades to my truck. i dont know exactly the kind of hp im making, but its enough, and i am not scared one bit of thrashing that thing. its never in my mind "is the tranny gonna hold"

I will have right at 3500 in my swap when done .Thats not even all the bells and whistles either . I am building it myself and installing it myself . You could have another 2k in labor if you pay average labor rates for install and rebuild( around here in fl anyway) ..

What are you wanting? You've asked and been answered. It depends on your personal skill. There are black and white prices in my forum if you read them. Every time you get an answer you turn around and use it to bash Jeremy. It's not right for you to do that and the right thing would be for you to quit asking. You've made it very clear you do not want one. Please move on and quit using an "honest looking" question as fuel to continue an argument.
Here's a link to the thread that proves this point:

You need to keep it in private messages or phone calls or whatever, but please don't use the drivetrain "TECH" forum as a personal place to bash another owner.:2cents:

The fact of the matter is nobody has an invoice from a tranny shop/race shop that did a complete swap over. There are only prices of parts break downs, buddy prices, I guess it is too scary a thought to publish an invoice from a complete swap over w/out the owner doing the labor or friends doing part of the labor.
Also, you are wrong, I never stated I do not want one. (not sure where you got that from)?
Another thing I am not bashing Jeremy, that was just an example of another price for buddy's help from you , installing it, etc, it does not represent a typicle price of a 4L80 -E swap over ,does it, are you going to sell me a swap over 4L80-E for $1000 complete?
Did not think so!!!

At least this guy seems honest.
And also states the labor would be about $2000.
Which is about where I estimate the swap for $5000.00

I'm not gonna argue with you. Anyone can see what your doing. You want the most EXPENSIVE answer possible. Then you want to use that to say Jeremy has a $10K mod done to his truck. It's obvious. You've done it too many times.
The fact is that you can do a 4L80e as inexpensively or as expensively as your budget or needs can allow. If you can do your own, go to the junkyard of a guy you know, put the 4L80e outputshaft and adaptor plate in and run a converter with no lockup, check ebay for a used controller and you can do it for under a $1000. If you can do your own welding and know people that do driveshaft work it is very possible.
Then there is the other end. You want a full billet WOT lockup capable transmission that can withstand 1000 foot pounds of torque, no, you cannot do it for under $6K.
Regardless of the answer, you will use it to bash Jeremy. I will no longer answer any questions from you on this subject as I've seen what you do with those answers.

George is my hero....

I don't see why Rick doesn't get it. I most certainly won't pay a shop to do the tranny work for me. I'd pay george to build one, then install it myself. Why will you pay a tranny shop to put in one in? Most people won't let a shop touch thier truck for anything else, why is the tranny any different.

People aren't scared to post what it costs, people just don't do it that way. Of all the Sy/Ty owners I've met, I'd be hard pressed to find more than one or two who have the kind of cash it takes to pay a shop full labor rates to get an 80E installed. It's simply cost prohibitive if you go that route......However if you're racing 13 year old trucks that have known driveline issues, chances are you know everything is going to be expensive, and if you're pissed about spending some cash, I would highly suggest you go find a fart can, and start racing hondas. I hear they are alot cheaper to race.

Jeremy got his done with ALOT of trial and error, that leads to ALOT of enginuity. I know there were 3-4 crossmembers in there. I also can't count the number of times the tranny computer took a crap, or the amount of time it took to get the DRAC calibrated right......Ultimately what he saved in cash, he easily paid in time and effort to make it work right.

No matter which way you slice it, breaking transmissions is expensive. I congratulate you on going under 12.50's on a stocker. Keep beating on it like that and it will break a transmission or three. Perhaps you'll change your tune when you realize that the peace of mind is worth the time and effort.
