Re: zq8 install walkthru?

thought it was a direct bolt on. You will need a puller for the pitman arm.

I haven't seen a walk through for it.

You'll need to take the pitman arm loose from the center link.

Remove the 2 lines that go to the steering box.

Take out your steering shaft, has 2 bolts, one on top and one on the bottom.

Remove the 3 bolt that hold the box to the frame.

Pull the box out the truck, change pitman arms to the old one if still useable or puchase a new one.

Then do everthing in reverse.

You'll want to take note of where everything is so you can put the pitman arm and steering shaft back and everything be correct.

Is there any reason for the dash to be pulled? I remember someone complaining about pulling a dash.. Also do u guys recommend any kind of steering fluid or will ATF do?

No you shouldn't ever need to remove the dash, regular power steering fluind has always worked for me.

How do you get rid of that hard plastic boot that joins the shaft with the box? I can't rotate get it away far enough to get at the bolts, can I just loosen the bolt by the firewall and pull the box and shaft out that way?

Disconnect the steering shaft where its connects around the fire wall. Its one bolt/nut and slides off. It its rusty it might take some effort/penatrating oil.

I had to remove my lower innercooler when I replaced my box. Make sure you mark where the pitman arm is installed when you move it. Also note how far it sits on the shaft (hehe, shaft), and try to match it up on the new box. Probably wouldn't hurt to just replace the arm if it's fairly old, since you have it out.

Re: zq8 install walkthru?

I'm having problems with the 90 degree line fitting... My 18mm crowsfoot just spins and doesn't grab the 17 is too small... I like the fitting in the pic on the bottom, because u can just use a deep socket to get it off.... Is there a reason why the other fitting (above) must be used? Why can't i just convert it to an hose clamp style like the bottom one?

Re: zq8 install walkthru?

I replaced both the steering shaft( flaming) and the box how do you align it for neutral since marking on the old stuff wouldn't do any good as i'm using neither old part...

You should be using a flare nut wrench for all of your line fittings. I am pretty sure they are all metric because at the time I did mine I only own metric flarenut wrenchs.

If you didn't remove the idler or tie rod ends you should be able to just reattach the pitman arm to the center link and that should be good. Then straighten out the wheels the best you can, make sure your steering wheel is level, and reattach your new steering shaft.

If you removed the idler arm your going to have to get it as close as you can since it bolts into slotted holes to align the center link.

Either way I would get the alignment checked now and they should be able to adjust everything where it needs to go.

Re: zq8 install walkthru?

Should the dimple and the hex bolt line up? Because when they are lined up the tires are slightly to the right...

Re: zq8 install walkthru?

I'll go look at mine, but there is a flat spot on the inside of the shaft that should line up with tha flat spot on the steering box. Either way that should have no effect on whether the tires are straight or not.

Re: zq8 install walkthru?

My steering shaft doesn't have a allen screw in ( diferent brand steering shaft ) so like I said there should be a flat spot on the shaft. Match them up together and push in, you should be good to go.

Re: zq8 install walkthru?

Were did that shaft come from?

I don't know about that shaft but from the pic that dimple doesn't look far enough down on the box for that allen head to go into. It seems like the shaft would only be on there about a 1/2 inch and I would think it needs to on farther down then that.

If you can't get ahold of where it came from, IF IT WAS ME, I would push it on as far as I could and then tighten the allen head down on the flat area somewhere. Mine has a bolt off to the side that when tightened crimps the shaft onto the the box and the two flat areas mate together and that's what keep it from spinning.
