refitting the front windscreen

It rained really badly the last two days and my windscreen started leaking - badly.

If I were to remove the front windscreen, grind the rust away and refit the window, are there any parts that I would need?

The main one I am thinkin of is the stuff called the "weather strip" I think? Is that specific to the Ty or can you get it anywhere? It goes over the seal between the glass and the car.

In time I want to do a full dip/respray but I can't justify that right now.

Standard I know, but I don't have any S 10 dealers or suppliers over here, so I need to order it all from the US.

I guess I need a shopping list so that the work can be done. Search was no help.

The stuff you want to use is called "window weld", a 3M product.
There is a primer you use with it also.
What I'd recommend is to use a knife from the inside, and cut the old sealant and get the window out. Get ALL of the old butyl crap out of there, use navel jelly, sand blast, whatever, get all the rust out, reprime, repaint the window molding, use the 3m primer.
The glass will be the same way. You have to get all of the old butyl crap off of there. The "window weld" is a polyurethane product and doesn't work well on butyl.
Also take the primer and prime around the edge of the glass. Maybe an inch wide or so.
There is stuff I've used called "prep sol". It's a solvent used for final cleaning to remove road tar and stuff before painting work starts.
I'm REALLY happy with the results of this doing my side windows in the back of the Typhoon.

From this then it appears that I need to:

remove the trim

cut away the rubber

remove the window

use 3M to clean all the rubber off the glass

blast / re weld the rusted area

(preparatory solvent?)

prime it (glass as well) (3M)

paint it

use sealant

fit the window

install the weather strip with the sealant

admire and stop the leaks?


Ok, so how do I match the paint? I don't want a big mismatch, but at the same time I am going to need to get a respray done soon as well........

The truck is arctic white - I'll search for the paint code I guess...

Is that all there is?

Is that the same process for the rear windows? The weather strip on the rear is gone as well.

I need to do the rear side windows as well, but I cannot see a part number for the weather strip for the rear windows.

LMC truck are saying that it is 59.95 for a piece of rubber that fits BOTH sides? How can that be? They are symmetrical?

And there is no part for the weatherstrip? Can you help me out here? My truck looks shabby

Same piece fits both sides. It has an angle molded into it that fits into the front corner and just make sure you warm it up before you pu it on the glass. I put it on the glass after cleaning the glass really good with prep solvent and windex then put the glass primer on the edge about a 1 1/4" wide covering the trim and onto the glass on the inside(on the side you can't see). Let it dry. Do the channel with the primer after fixing it, let it dry. Use a suction cup dent pull to hold the galss. Put the 3M window weld in the channel(two rows). Set the glass in and use a dry rag and work it in all the way around tite! Then get inside. Look for areas that didn't make contact(mainly toward the front). Use MORE window weld and a gloved finger and work it into the channel until full. Let it set and you'll have NO leaks. Use a flashlight to check for sure inside. Best if you have the interior trim off that's around the windows when you do it.

Oh, I thought that piece was on the inside.

So the window is glued to the metal frame of the car then, with that trim over the outside?

That is a big help!

Yep. That trim is very flexible and has a butyl lined channel on the inside that slips over the window. It's tight like a condom on there so make sure you warm it up so it gives a little more when you put it on the window.

When you cut that rear window out, start by taking a utility knife and go at it from the outside and hold the knife perpendicular to the window and cut all the way around the window as deep as you can. Then go inside and hold the knife as parallel with the window as much as possible and work your way around that way. Make sure the suction cup is stuck to the glass and someone outside is holding it when you make the cut because it will release. I left the middle of the top intact. Maybe 4" wide? Then got out and pulled it loose. Don't force it. If its still tight.

I assume this is the same procedure as the rear window on a Sonoma as well?
