vortecs are the only way to go if your doing an engine build , they flow twice as much air as the stock heads, so really no need to port them and are'nt as prone to cause knock as the stock heads, just spend the extra $$ for em, as far a cams go any one of them u listed will work . and as far as times at the track go ?? i'll give you an idea with my build which is what your talking about doing . a safe chip tune and only running 15 psi . at 5500 ft. elevation 13.40 with 5lb boost launches . which is changing now that installed the alky and plan on running 20-22 psi this year

I could have swore up and down that the lower intake was cheaper then $450 a few months back, I dont know why. But for some reason I remember it being only.. $250. $450 was without a core.. :dunno: I could be wrong.

$250 is without porting from RPM I believe. $450 is with porting.

As far as L35s vs Vortecs, do a search on here because I was reading how FULLY worked L35s flowed barely more than lightly cleaned up Vortecs. Also, don't forget about the all too important improved combustion chamber of the Vortecs. That's what mostly makes them so great.

Technically stock vortecs flow about 45% more than the stock head and 25% more than a stock L35. I also imgine that a L35 & Vortec head could be ported to about the same cfm. A L35 would just need a hell of lot more work. The Vortecs have 2 major advantages, out of the box they flow a lot better and would need less work to reach a certain air flow when port and as said before they are less detonation resistant. This means that you can run about 6 degree of more timing.

So with the datamaster program I can actually TUNE and MONITOR my truck right....I dont need anything extra to reflash the input into the ecm on the truck?!

Wrong. Data Master only tells you what your truck is doing at the time and has no control over editing the parameters. You can monitor and record, but not tune.

If you want to edit stuff you will need to get TunerPro RT. Its free but $30 keeps them in business.

You can edit your chips by burning them and will need an EEPROM or an EPROM. (EEPROM is Electrically Erasable - EPROM is erasable using UV light. Very fiddly). Both methods require you to remove the chip each and every time you want to tune it. Then you will need the chip burner as well.

Or you can do what I am going to do which is get a PROMinator which allows you to program the chip from inside the car via laptop for instantaneous responses.

Its an intimidating area but there is some good info and some very good people on this board.

Thanks everyone....The PROMinator sounds like the way to go!!! ---

You guys are going to laugh, but I only want solid 11's out of this truck so I scored a nice set of L-35's ported by Jerry McCoy of McCoy Motorsports, stage 1. They guarantee 40+ hp over stock, then I want to use the 415 cam ( est 20hp ) , the alki kit (10 hp), and a 9/11 3000k or less stall, with a TURBO TIME or RPM a/a kit (40hp) ... I should still see 400+ hp (without including the pte63 turbo upgrade) and 11's, and I dont have to leave my truck inoperable in my APT lot .... sweet !!!

***So should I go with 65# injectors and be set?! ---

Would a set of rear traction bars and front coilovers help!?
What set of headers should I get for the pte63...or should the stockers work just fine?! ---

OK, well I think 65# injectors will be great....and I will go for the ATR 3" downpipe.

Now what headers can I use for a clean install with the pte63 turbo.....I think KB ones wont work....what about ATR or RPM headers....or are the stock manifolds pretty good?! ---

Disclaimer: Not promoting one vendor or another below, but simply providing copied info into thread (from Campbell Automotive Website):

Nolan's Typhoon. This truck is 4200lbs and has run 10.79 @ 123mph with a stock ECM, stock crank and block with 4 bolt mains, ported vortec heads, and a little bit of boost (30psi). There a new combo in the works that will make this truck even faster...

Mark's 1992 GMC Typhoon. With the stock engine this truck made 360HP and 500Ft.Lbs at the wheels at 22psi boost and ran 12.35 @ 108 mph in the quarter mile.
The new engine has Vortec heads, custom camshaft, Eagle rods, Wieseco Pistons and the Big Kahuna bolt on turbo w/stock downpipe and intercooler. This combo made 610hp and 750ft.lbs @ 24psi on the engine dyno. The truck ran 11.57 @ 119 mph with 24 psi boost on pump gas with mthanol injection.

[I know the vehicles above are Typhoons, but it demonstrates builds/times and not seat-of-the-pants guess-estimates with running modifications. Im sure an of the many vendors on this site have similar experience/knowledge if contacted].

WHOA I didnt realize you need 610hp for mid 11's, hahah....sounds like high 11's , low 12's is what I should be expecting with the stuff I want. ---

500 hp on a well tuned truck will turn 10.50 to 10.75 all day long.

and by well tuned i mean engine, trans, suspension etc the whole works.

look at phil longs times @ 500hp and coleman315 11.0x w/ 454 hp.

but they were setup correctly. :2cents: :2cents:

Re: Change of Plans....how does this setup sound?! ---

So will my truck run good on a stock bottom end ( 67k miles ) with about 450 - 475hp?! I am not sure what the stock rods/crank can handle. Thanks ---

Re: Change of Plans....how does this setup sound?! ---

The stock rods/pistons are barely adequate for the stock levels. If the tune is right on it can handle 450+ but it will have very little tolerance for any mistakes or detonation.

Just another reason to get a full rebuild, haha. I dont see many people mention the use of a STROKER CRANK ... are they bad for turbo builds?! Thanks ---

No strokers aren't bad, but the only really stroker cranks are billet cranks and you looking at $2500 + balancing. It could easily cost $3000.

Re: Change of Plans....how does this setup sound?! ---

I just recently learned about the 422 comp cam.....its seems to be the 415 but with a 114 lobe separation vs a 112. Now that 114 takes away the lope , but is supposed to be better for boost right?! Should I go 422?! ---

EDIT: I just got an RPM A/A intercooler, new ATR 3" downpipe, and a set of ATR headers.... SWEET!!! , time for battery relocation, new steering stem, and time to get a VOLVO fan :D ---
