Rookie stereo questions?

I'm in the process of installing a stereo in my Typhoon. It consists of a Alpine CD player, Diamond Audio Hex series 6-1/2 and tweet components in the front (mounted in Q-forms), two JL audio 12w6's, JL Audio 1000/1 amp, Alpine MRD-F752 5-channel amp, using four out of the five channels to run the front speakers and I'm not running any rear fill.
My questions are.

First I have the battery relocated to the rear of the vehicle and the power wire runs inside the vehicle along the passenger side floor to the battery in the rear. Is there any problem with RCA's or remote turn on wire being close to this power wire?

Second should I be running the remote turn on wire on one specific side and where does it go exactly?

Third when the remote turn on wire gets to the rear of the truck should it just go to one amp, or can I splice it in the rear and run it to both amps?

I will be running 4 gauge wiring from the battery to a junction block then two 8 gauge wires from the junction block to both amps, same for the ground.

I havent installed stereo equiptment in a long time. When I was 16-19 my friends and I would do this on a regular basis. After that I always had someone else install all of my stereo's.

I've had a lot of free time on my hands lately and a bunch of stereo equiptment laying around so I figured I would throw it in the Ty for a little while. I made the box so it could easily be removed for when I go to the track.

Sorry for the long post.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Re: Rookie stereo questions?

All the remote wire does is act like a relay. Once power is applied to everything it needs signal from the remote wire to turn on. The remote wire can be close to the power cord. There should be no problem with that. Also check out the manuals on each amp. There are different configurations that the amp can be run in. You may be able to have one amp piggyback off the other for the remote wire.
I would try spliting the remote wire into two wires so both amps can turn on. If it does not work its not going to wreck anything. Its hard to tell what your opions are without looking at the manual and amps.

Re: Rookie stereo questions?

Since you are using the amps to feed the interiors I would try to keep the RCA's down the other side of the truck to keep any noise from the power wire from being induced into the RCA.

As far as piggy backing the remote turn on leads I dont see a problem with that at all. The amplifiers draw such a small amount of current from that wire. The only question is where are you getting this switched. Most aftermarked radios have this remote turn on wire but only put out a small amount and with larger amplifiers its possible to hurt the headunit if you run too much off of it. A simple relay on that remote wire would ensure that nothing happens to the radio. You probably would be fine without it but its a cheap cover your own ass thing that takes an extra few minutes. It also doesnt matter which side you run the remote down.

The cables sound goo just check out a wire guage calculator. it will tell you how large a wire needs to be for how much current you are drawing over a certain length of cable run. Heres a link that should help.

Re: Rookie stereo questions?

Run the RCA's and Power Wires seperately, so noise isn't introduced into the system. (long runs of wires next to each other is bad for signal integrity) I usually run the remote turn on with the RCA's, I have seen a few RCA's that have the remote turn on incorporate into the RCA cabling. The remote turn on can be split a a few times. I have split them 3 and 4 times in my installs a few times. If you were have any probems turning on components (amplifier, signal processors, etc), you can add a relay.

Re: Rookie stereo questions?

If you are worried about rfi use the blu rcas from jl, they work great. also you do not need a remote wire for the slash JL amps, they are voltage sensing, and will turn on when the music comes on anyways, you just need one for the alpine

Re: Rookie stereo questions?

Thanks for all of the help guys. I've run the RCA on the same side as the main power wire but away from the power wire. I have the rca's running under the RF seat and the power wire running along the sill plate. I understand all about the remote turn on wire now but where I splice it into in the front of the truck? Is it behind the radio or somewhere else?
Thanks again,
Nick

Yes, blue (or blue/white) will do the trick. If you have both it's the one with the white stripe IIRC.
blue/white = aux/remote (whatever you want to call it) = on when head unit is on
solid blue = power antenna = not on if "cd" or "aux" is playing).

Someone correct me if I have these reversed but I'm 98% sure (won't hurt anything if I'm wrong anyhow). HTHs

Re: Rookie stereo questions?

I personally wouldnt run 8 gauge wire to a 1000 watt amp, i would go at least 4 gauge. I agree with the relay on the remote wire for multiple amps, i have had low power on remote wires effect amps before. What size wire is going from the alt to the battery in the back?

The wire is at leaste four gauge, it might be even bigger like two gauge.

Thanks again for all of the help. I'm going now to tackle the rest of the wiring and install.

Keep wires and rca's at least a foot apart.

Second should I be running the remote turn on wire on one specific side and where does it go exactly?

Doesnt matter at all, most run it with rca's to keep it simple from back of headunit to install.

Third when the remote turn on wire gets to the rear of the truck should it just go to one amp, or can I splice it in the rear and run it to both amps?

If only useing it to power the two pieces (both amps) it is fine to jump from one to next.

I will be running 4 gauge wiring from the battery to a junction block then two 8 gauge wires from the junction block to both amps, same for the ground.

Lets start up front. Alt to battery needs to be 2ga. or bigger. Alt ground 2ga or bigger. Battery to sub amp needs to be 4ga at least. JL 1000/1 needs its power. Battery to 5channel 8ga will work but 4ga would be better. If you use the sub channel, 4ga is a must. Now for the grounds, keep the wire the same size as power. Never smaller. Also run a 8ga wire from alt grounding to common ground. Install ground 8ga to common ground. Common ground in the middle of truck from front to back. keeps the engine feed back a none. Common ground no to be used as main ground. Just to keep feed back to a none.

As for the track, make sure to take wire from amp off to sub box. Dont leave attached to amp. If it grounds itself you will have a fire in back of truck.
