POR-15 the gas tank

I recently removed the gas tank in my TY so I could swap the stock fuel pump for a high flow warlbro pump. When I did this, I noticed some rust on the tank and a fuel sender starting to rot. I guess it was from all the water that soaked into the dirt and sand on top of the tank. So I had a buddy of mine get me the fuel sender at cost and I bought a quart or por-15,marine clean, and metal ready.

Degreased with marine clean and rinsed off with warm water.

Sprayed with metal ready and kept wet for 20 minutes, then rinsed off with warm water as well.

I'm not sure what this black stuff is but it was there when I pulled the tank.

I will be buying some tar paper to replace the old strips that go between the straps and tank. I only have one question...What should I do about sealing off the new fuel sender and the tank? I used the o-ring of course, but I would like to take a candle and melt it in and around the gap. Or maybe use some sillicone to seal it off? Just so I don't have water sitting in the gap. What should I do?
Oh yeah...Sorry for the huge pics.

That shit gets everywhere!!! Took like 4 weeks to get it off my elbows. Nice work.

Thanks man. Luckily it only stained a quarter sized spot on my arm.

Looking GREAT ! I'm a POR-15er too :):

It's expensive but a little goes a LONG ways...

With regards to the top of the sending unit, I have always used a huge blob of grease on my trucks with great success. The lock ring looked brand new several years later on my S10 when I had to install a new tank (got rust pin holes in it). I was able to reuse the lock ring and the sending unit didn't look any worse off than when I greased it up years before.

Thanks. The grease sounds like a good idea.

you're missing an o-ring on the return line.

Yes I am aware of that. Thank you for pointing that out though. That would have been a pain in the ass if I hadn't noticed.

JC Whitney sells plastic tanks. I've got one in my Blazer. No leaks or sealing issues.

Nice job, BTW.

Do you have the MTS one? I bought one from my old S10 several years ago and this is what I got to hold the sending unit on top of the tank:

Seems someone at the factory thought that chopping up some conduit or a fence post into small plates, hammering them flat and then drilling them for sheet metal screws was an acceptable way to mount the sender to the top of the tank .

Re: POR-15 the gas tank

Yeah, the top looks just like that. I agree that is the stupidest way to seal it, but the tank itself is quality, and have had no leaks in over two years.
