Re: 4l80e conversion.

ok everyone. No more attacks, keep this discussion civil....or it'll just get locked and become useless for everyone.

George and Tooky....how about you guys just ignore each other since its obvious that there is a major miscommunication between you and bickering about it in this thread isn't going to change anything, much less help the thread.

George, your insight is great...please continue to offer advise.
Tooky, your questions are thought out...please continue to seek knowledge.

thats all...please get back on topic here and difuse the bickering.

Re: 4l80e conversion.

Got everything deleted.
I won't subject myself to this nonsense anymore.
If you have a question you want answered about an 80e PM, email, or use my forum.
Trying to run a business is hard enough without dealing with all the other crap from people trying to make you look like a bad person or you've made product that no one should use.
The history of the 80e was discussed in my forum.
Every aspect of the 80e was discussed there. The information gets obscured and it's hard to find, then I get accused of not sharing information.
I won't be participating in this forum outside of PMs or my vendors forum from this point forward. I'm not leaving, just don't see the point in getting attacked constantly by certain individuals every time I answer an individual's specific question regarding their specific situation and ability, see it taken out of context later and then being told it's ok.
I do not want the information that I put in this thread put back up. It's in my forum and really didn't need to be posted again, some of it for the 3rd or 4th time.
I apologize to all of you that had to muddle through the junk.

Re: 4l80e conversion.

shaft might, not sure on length. I believe that adaptor has the wrong angle built in to it.

Leaves you with crossmember, tranny brace, shift linkage left to figure out.

I am not one to tell you NOT to try your own thing, just know there is more than just a shaft and adaptor.

Jeff,
What tranny brace? Do you mean that long bar that bolt from the top of the transfercase to the front bellhousing?

Re: 4l80e conversion.

Yes, because transfer case gets moved back ~3.5" (due to longer transmission) the brace no longer fits. It needs to be extended on both end. Cant' just extend transfer case side as the bell housing will hit the stub. Gotta extend a little on both ends.

Looks like your buying a kit from older GP, it should have that piece in it. If not I do have a few laying around from when I built the kits.

George for sure knows his stuff ,But these back and fourth posts like this is what has made many syty guys with a ton of know how leave this board or not post any more, they think there are to many know it all people on here and dont want to deal with the drama, and that has been told to me MANY times by some of these people.

Thanks for your help, didnt know you used to build this kit too. I thought this is GB sole proprietor.

Re: 4l80e conversion.

4l80e history

Robert in Sweden and Ryan in Chicago both did 4l80e's first. Roberts is a re-splined shaft version, Ryan did a different transfer case out of a 4x4.

I was talking to Robert about how he did his, at same time found out GB was working on his version also. We teamed up, he had adaptor plate design done, shaft re-machine was fairly simple (had to figure out final length). I designed the brace extension, cross-member, and shifter linkage using my own typhoon frame when it was not hooked to the body.

(pics of prototype parts HERE)

Jeremy's sy was the test vehicle for the "kit" as it was originally done. GB built the trans, Jeremy and I installed it, got it all working, drove it to KC just a day after getting it installed, beat crap out of it to show how strong a basic stock 4l80e rebuild would hold. (his trans is still holding up strong, did have a TCC failure but was $30 in vehicle fix).

I built parts/kit for couple years, ended up selling through GB towards end. Due to personal things between him, myself and other life things I had going on I quit making parts. GB has continued to move on with parts, changed some things to his liking, designed input shaft for transfer case etc.

To say anybody including myself did it single handed would not be correct.

I have a few components left laying around (brace extensions, shifter linkage) but otherwise don't really build anything anymore. I am enjoying being just an owner again and not worried about building parts.

I still enjoy and have a lot of pride in syty's, and really do enjoy helping others build a truck that can be enjoyed.

This is all about budgets for everybody. I highly doubt any of us have unlimited incomes to spend, so people trying to find cheaper or more budget friendly alternatives is natural and expected. I can't fault anybody for this.

Everybody as a consumer, vendor or street clown on street has a choice on who to associate with or not.

Nothing on the 4l80e is high tech, special, but does have a lot of design involved. I have the advantage of having a milling machine, lathe, tubing bender, tig welder, mig welder, plasma cutter at home. Some people might have those resources available somehow and want to do there own thing, others will need to buy the parts for other reasons (time/resources).

In the end the goal for all of us is to enjoy these trucks and help each other. I think it is anyways.

Re: 4l80e conversion.

so what is a turn key 600 hp 4l cost?I mean eerything needed? to do it right

That is like asking how much a 600hp motor will cost. It all depends.

I believe treated properly a stock rebuild 80e can hold 600hp, on flip side a fully built 80e could be broken with 200hp treated wrong.

Paul in WA did a 4l80e pure basic rebuild with shiftkit. Guy charged him I think $700 he bought core for ~$300. So he had $1k into the trans, plus a install kit ~$1300, and he did a PCS controller of $850. Converter was $1k.

So about $4k and I suspect it will hold everything he can throw at it.

Could you do it cheaper sure. Controller is one place to cut some money IF you want to do some labor and understand wiring. http://mattw.dyndns.org/4L80E/ Mattw put up info he collected (partially from me) on how to use a GM ecm to control trans, same thing I did with Jeremy's. That controller can be done for $100 maybe less.

Can you use a stock Torque convertor, sure. It is twice the weight as a good after market one but it could be done.

Big expense is switching things over (conversion parts, controller, convertor).

Thanks man, i think this post answers 77% off all the Q's asked in this thread!

Re: 4l80e conversion.

I cleaned up my part in this. I started doing the 80e route based on a request from David Welch YEARS ago. The history is in my forum.
I apologize to all of you that had to dig through garbage to find useful information. I can garantee that I won't be a contributer to the nonsense again.
Now before you get too crazy telling everyone that no one needs the parts I make:
26206321261.jpg

The reality is that everyone's situation is different. As much as Tooky doesn't personally care for me, the fact remains that a 32 spline output shaft is stronger than a 27 spline shaft. Several have proven it. Some with 11second trucks, some with 8 second trucks.

What times were you putting down with that? I have the same one in mine but my TC is junk so I doubt it will happen to me soon!
