4l80E converter PATC questions

I've got a friend who has a PATC 3 disc billet convert built awhile back for a cummins powered Chevy truck with a 4l80E, It was a stock 4l80E from what i understand and it held up to 12k Miles of roughly 800-1000 RWTQ before the input shaft broke and he moved on to another trans.

Well the converter has been sitting since, It sounds like he would let it go for 200-250bucks (he paid 1100-1200 1-2 years back) then i would need to send it off to PATC to get it restalled to something reasonable (1300) currently. PATC sounds extreemly willing to open it up go over it and restall, said worest case if stuffs broke they didn't think it would be but 200-400 worest case but never gave me firm prices.. supposed to be calling me back today with that. They guy i talked to thought this whole thing was a no brainer but i'm not 100% sure.

The questions are..
PATC converters in general?

Its a full size converter not a 9.5 etc, When i asked PATC about it yesterday he said he wouldn't worry about it if i'm staying under 3000-3500RPM stall and thats part of the reason people are forced to goto a 9.5 to get the 4000+ stalls plus the added weight etc
Whats everyones thoughts on this?

Second I've not gotten to run my truck with the Pte-72GTQ turbo on a mostly built Vortec headed splayed main TY block etc etc. This trucks 2wd and ideas of where this turbo spools on your trucks? Traction limited I was planning on 2500-3000 stall speed again whats everyones thoughts?

trucks a mix of some street, strip and road course (non competitive at this point)

It's just a six

Not sure if you could get 3000 stall out of the stock full size converter? 14" converter?

What is the A/R on your turbine housing, specs on turbine wheel,P,Q,S trim? T4? Specs on your camshaft?

Re: 4l80E converter PATC questions

Well its not a stock converter its one of the ones PATC custom builds onsite, billet base etc 3 disc converter. Its just not a 9.5 it looks like a 14 which they told me really can't be stalled much past 3000-3500 area. My biggest concern is just if this larger converter is going to cause me to loose allot over the smaller lighter converters, Extra abuse on trans, loosing time in the 1/4?

The cam is basically a 422 its a custom McCoy cam but i think the specs were nearly identical to 422.

The turbo I bought off E-rue a long time ago, It has a SYTY hot side housing to work with stock manifolds T3 i think its .68 AR, Not sure on the rest to be completly honest i looked it up at one point but its been at least 2 years. 4" inlet cold side, They told me it was a new turbos someone ran and messed up center section with a metal from the motor so it ended up getting complete new center section at the factory reused housings but i thought he said new garret S wheel not 100% sure.

If i don't buy this one i doubt i buy another 3 disc, its probably going to be a Precision single disc 9.5 for 750 if i don't do this one. which i'll be giving up some WOT lockup between gears etc

Re: 4l80E converter PATC questions

Patc seems to think the converter would work fine however he said its probably 30-40lbs heavier then a good 9.5 version and he thought it would easily cost me .5 in the quarter mile.. he also said he'd run a single disc 9.5 all day over a 3 disc ful size but didn't seem to think it was a big deal to goto the 3 disc lockup. I told them i was thinking stalling it between 2500-3000 for traction reasons and he thought i was crazy said he daily drives a 3600 stall on a full size said with a turbo and small cubic inch i could make up major ground with 3000-3500+ converter.

I called Precision converters, i recently ordered a 9.5 4l80E single disc converter for another 408 gen 3 motor with a 4l80e going in a classic truck and they seemed to think i could go either route but having a lockup i could probably cut some time off my 1/4 however didn't think it would help on a road course at all.

Re: 4l80E converter PATC questions

I like my PI and like the small size. It works well so far and have no complaints about it's performance. I did get the 5 disc lock up for my 80 and it locks HARD.

Re: 4l80E converter PATC questions

alright its starting to seem like i'm walking away from this full size converter and i'll spend the $1028 dollars later :( to get a 3 disc PI 9.5 lockup. Only good news is with the price increase they extended the warranty to 5 years..

So everyone kinda agrees its worth spending 500 extra to goto a new 9.5 converter over picking up a full size 12"ish PATC one that bought and restalled etc i would have less then 500 in?

Re: 4l80E converter PATC questions

When i called him, cause their site is not always the best managed, he said a triple disk lock-up with all the good stuff. They are kinda to order. Just call him, and see what he says.
