4L80e output shaft

Re: 4L80e output shaft

More surprises... The shaft I got is the same length as the one I got from Blake and it never was long enough. According to his directions, it should have stuck out by 5/8" so God only knows where this came from... You can see it is flush. I'm surprised it didn't snap off sooner.

No matter, I'm going to cut the 5" shaft down. Should be fun!

Im confused here...you ordered 2 shafts? one is a 5" and the other?

Do you have a part# for the 5"?

Re: 4L80e output shaft

So, to answer both questions...

Syclone260: I ordered a regular 4WD output shaft and installed it. It doesn't stick out 5/8" like I thought it should even though it is stronger. Consequently, I ordered the 5" spline 2WD output spline. I may cut it down depending on the engagement of the SpeedInc custom TC input shaft.

I don't have a part number. I just told them if it was pre 96 (oil passage differences).

Hope that clarifies things.

Matt!

The plan is still extant. I am going rebuild both and install one of my 80es this summer. I hope that I can get one working. I need another output shaft for one of them. We shall see. I am at the end of my rope with the DIY shit. If I can't get either trans running, I am going to go with Rossler/CKPerformance/Jake's/RPM and try and enjoy my truck. There's a point where you admit you have neither the time nor the patience to learn.

Are you replacing the shafts yourself or having a shop do it? I got quoted $350+ just to swap the shaft out and wondering if its something I can do myself.

Re: 4L80e output shaft

That's a lot of money for what is a pretty simple task.

You need to remove the pan and VB then lift the pump out. After that, there are about 3 different clutch assemblies that lift out. The shaft is the last thing to come out.

Make sure you have a spare separator plate replacement gasket, take your time and that's an easy job. I'd say if it were your first time, budget 3 hours to swap it, from on the bench to reassembled. Have a long flathead screwdriver, the 4L80e ATSG manual and a big tote. Be careful with the check balls, replace the 4th clutch (I think it's that) holding bolt and make sure it's all torqued correctly and it's not too big of a deal.

I thought it sounded a little high on price.
I found this video for those brave enough to mess with it.

Yea... Sounds a little high... After we "Discovered" the George Blake fiasco, I took my 80e to my trans guy who went through the entire trans, checking clearances, parts, etc... And while he was in there, he threw in a 32 spline output shaft for me... Cost was $450 in Labor and an extra $400 or so to replace my missing forged Intermediate shaft and billet forward clutch hub..

Re: 4L80e output shaft

Im coming up with a maximum length of 7/8" from the tailshaft sticking out for full engagement into the speed inc input shaft...going to cut shaft shorty to confirm.

Well my blade is too dull to cut this shaft...had to order new blades (5 days away).

To be continued...

Re: 4L80e output shaft

Any updates on this? What blade were you using? A band saw? I plan to use an angle grinder or maybe even that rip saw thing that cuts metal and leaves it cold. That is some mental machining. I couldn't believe how cool the metal was to touch!

Damn Denny, just use mm! :D

:D

So, the shafts need cutting. Thank again George, all these little treats left to find.

Re: 4L80e output shaft

This is the shaft I cut down today.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4L80E-OUTPU...ash=item4ae191b233:g:hq4AAOSwj0NUhjk5&vxp=mtr

this is how much I had to cut off for a better fit.

this how much it sticks out now...

I used this from Home Depot to cut it with...then used the grinder to smooth it flat.
