4l80E trans and transfer case on Craigslist

I was scoping for a transfer case for my Ty conversion, and ran across this.
There has been a lot of discussion about the expense of converting, and the strength of the trans.
Here's someone selling both items for asking price of $700...

In case anyone's interested...

I have a spare xfer case out of 50k wrecked Syclone. $300 plus shipping from Trenton NJ and it's yours. It's all cleaned up nice and undamaged from the wreck. Let me know soon if you want it.

Just so that everybody knows...

The 4L80E came out it 1991. GM has made numerous improvements over the years (like its been a long time, its only been in production for 15 years). Almost all of those improvements are to provide higher torque capacity. I'd personally suggest getting as late a transmission as possible. Certainly a 1999 or newer. I'm pretty sure that 1999 was the last "Major" revision change.

Also, there is the 4L85E, which is slightly heavier duty (from the factory). I'm not real sure exactly what changes, but it is still basically the same tranny.

Figured I'd throw my 0.02 in there.

In 2001 they changed the overrun roller clutch. They made the rollers smaller so they could widen the area for the inner race. 24222160 is the part number for the complete setup so it can be retro fitted in anything back to 91. Runs almost $500 from GM parts direct though. :bad-word:
I think in 1999 they made the pinions 10% thicker in all of them and a .041" shim was added to center everything up. Mine's a 2000 and it's got it. The 4l85s are kinda rare...right now anyway. I would personally get anything from 1998 up. You can change to the wider band easily with just a band and servo change.

Good to know about the 2001 revisions. I probably have that info in the 80E ATSG manual, but didn't remember it. Either way, later is better, but 1999 and later is probably a good guideline (to have bigger pinions).

I haven't looked for the 85E specifically. Didn't know they were hard to find. Have only been semi-seriously looking for an 80E / 85E, because I don't have the truck that needs it yet. Once I buy the truck (1998 to 2000 Blazer / Jimmy / Bravada) and get down to swapping motors (6.0l LQ4 truck motor or maybe the 5.7l Vette LS1 motor, haven't figured out which exactly as yet) then actually buying a transmission will be much more important.

It's not in the ATSG. Found out about it from Transtar. Look at their online catalog and it's in there.

Re: 4l80E trans and transfer case on Craigslist

I looked at my ATSG manual for the 80E last night. It does cover the 2001 revisions to the overrun roller, at least in the one I have (which is the 2003 revision)

The 4L85E looks like it is only available behind the 8.1L big block, which would explain its limited availability. I think that would mean big-block suburbans and maybe some big block trucks (where they didn't opt for the 5 speed Allison).

Thanks for the info on Transtar. I hadn't seen their website before, and there is alot of info there. I probably printed out 20 pages of stuff for my records.

You can get the 85E from a number of places online.

Point me where to go. Sallee Chevrolet talked about some issue with trying to get the correct part number for the 4L85 as GM is playing with numbers again. It made me question what kind of trucks actually has the 4L85 in them to look for.

I haven't dealt with Sallee...

Only place I could suggest is SDPC (Scoggin Dickey Parts Center). They (well, whoever is there web contact) are(is) a regular sponsor / poster on LS1tech.com.

They seem to have a pretty good grip on LS1 stuff (including the new LS2 stuff when it was just coming out). I'd say shooting them an email wouldn't be a bad idea.

Thanks for the info on the ATSG. Looks like I need to get the newer version. Is there a number on the book that I need to look for?

I'll look at my ATSG tonight when I get home. Not sure that anything has changed significantly, other than them adding a couple of pages on the 02 revisions.

Re: 4l80E trans and transfer case on Craigslist

Are they the kind of revisions that they just add in the back of the manual?
If so, could you copy them and email them to me or snail mail them to me?
Thanks for taking the time to look.

Alrighty....

I looked up the '01 revision notes in my ATSG manual (which is marked as being updated March of 2003). The stuff in there is on the new design overrun roller clutch. 5 pages, 1 page of text, 4 pages of figures.

I expect I could figure out how to scan them and email them to you. I'll work on that in the next couple of days.
