Re: 4l80e ?

The post-97 models have a different oiling system and some vendors say that the earlier models acan take more power. For a SyTy, you need a 4x4 as it has the right output shaft. There's a lot of info on here.

A core can be rebuilt so it depends on what your goals are as to what you get. A 4x4 core is the easiest regardless.

Re: 4l80e ?

so if I got say a 2002 4x4 4l80e that would be tits and already have the correct output shaft and just get the transfer case adapter and other stuff? and if I got a 2wrd I would have to replace the shaft along with the other stuff?

Re: 4l80e ?

oh ya one more dumb question as I am a new to the gm products, is the bell housing bolt pattern the same for the 4.3 and the 4l80e that was out of a 2002 2500 truck with 6.0l

on my 4l80-e trans there is a place for a bolt, top center on the bell housing, no provisions on my ls block for on. But it should bolt to your 4.3 block, same issue as far as I know.

Re: 4l80e ?

one thing i just found out as i am in the middle of building the harness, is that the 4.80e requires two speed sensors, one input and one output. well, the 4wd ones only have the input sensor because the output sensor is on the transfer case output, which makes sense in a hi/low box. The case has a plug in it but there is no reluctor gear on the output planetary so you either need to install the reluctor(theyre only about $25) and sensor, or use the stock one. if you use the stock one then you will need to share that signal with the DRAC in order to keep a speedo. I have not figured out whether or not i can tee off the VR lines without causing problems, so i will be installing the additional reluctor and sensor in the back of the trans and leaving the stock vss and drac to run the speedo.

Re: 4l80e ?

I haven't come across this problem. You don't need to do anything fancy with the DRAC...Just plug the stock connector into the transfer case and use the TISS and TOSS on the side of the trans with your controller. They both have 2 sensors on the side IIRC.

Re: 4l80e ?

above post is correct. use the one on the transfer case. The plugs are different sizes just so you know.

Re: 4l80e ?

Most 4l80es that were originally from a 4x4 do not have a rear vss sensor (TOSS) or the reluctor wheel installed on the output planetary. I have mine apart anyway for a rebuild so its not a huge deal but for someone that plans to use theirs without taking it apart, they need to make sure that second reluctor wheel is present, otherwise they would need to use the tc sensor, and figure out a different way to control the speedometer.
