80e donor vehicle

Guys,

I know these questions have been covered but I feel the 80e info is a little dated.. mostly due to the availability of the Mark William's shaft and Stouts adaptor..

I going to pickup an 80e out of a 2001 Chevy Express passenger van with a 5.7 and 72k on the clock, I wouldn't think it was beat all the hard given the vehicle its coming out of... Since this trans has all the preferred updates my only plans are the transgo shift kit and torque converter..

I plan to use the Holley Dominator for control, I have the adaptors mentioned above and Jeff Scotts crossmember on the way.

I know I need..
Lokar dipstick
Drive Shafts

Is the shifter linkage the same?

Am missing anything here? Is there anything that I should be aware of using this vehicle as a donor.. Thx

Re: 80e donor vehicle

I have never needed a different cable, shift linkage yes along with bracket to bolt to pan.

You may want to find a way to extend the trans brace to get it to fit again.

Are you talking about a tighter shifting linkage bracket for HD prop shaft or something totally different?

Also, what do you mean by extending the trans brace to get what to fit again? Or was that comment not directed towards me...

He's talking about the brace that goes from the bellhousing area of the transmissions back to the transfer case. It'll be too short after conversion you'll need to extend it. RPM used to make an extension but I don't think it's in the site anymore.

I suppose you could also just cut and weld it?

Make sure it is an 80E and not a 60E. We have an entire fleet of these vans (various years) and all the AWD vans are 1500's with 60E's. The 2500's are 2WD and some had 80E's

I don't recall a brace, what did the brace hold? It's been a year or so since I removed the trans so I have probably forgotten..... The only thing I really remember is the bracket the secures the fuel line to the transfer case.

I appreciate the feedback, the owner of the yard is a friend of mine and he said its an 80e 2 wheel drive. I'll know when I see it... Thx

I just quickly scoured the forum for a pic, sorry it's not the best but it'll jog your memory...

Black steel support bar right above propshaft - screws into the bellhousing area of the transmission and connects back to the transfer case (really a bracket on the transfer case).

Re: 80e donor vehicle

you will have to cut the ears off the 80e and if I remember correctly you have to change the shifter shaft to a shorter one, all the conversion items came in a G P by George Blake, shifter cable shifter lever, cross member, shifter bracket, if it is a 2wd van it should have the out put shaft that is splined all the way up and can be cut to length, so a complete teardown is not necessary as mentioned by crispy. (I used my stock cable, so I do have an extra heavy duty GB cable). the extension of the transfer case brace was just a short length of pipe and an extra long bolt, sorry don't remember the length of the extension. I believe it had the early JSM transfer case adapter plate, as you can see in the post http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=63338&highlight=4l80e George Blake built my transmission.
I also have an extra Lokar 4l80e dip stick, (you can P M me if interested in the extra parts) Sports Machines should have the drive shafts.

I know RPM is no longer a form sponsor so I hope this post is OK.

My truck did not have the original trans so I assume this was left off.. Do I really need it? I assume it resist twisting from all the torque...

Re: 80e donor vehicle

Guys.. I have verified that I do have the longer output shaft that would normally come in the Express Van..
Have any of you ever cut the shaft while still installed in the trans? If so, what did you use or did you take it somewhere? Also, how much needs to be cut?

Re: 80e donor vehicle

When I was researching my 4L80E build, I seem to remember seeing several posts from George Blake suggesting that the output shaft could be shortened with a cutoff wheel while it was installed in the transmission. Again, my memory seems to be he just suggested taping off the output shaft seal to avoid getting shavings in it. You may be able to search under his name to find more.

One advantage of cutting it off while installed in the trans is that you can wait until it's ready to match up to the transfer case (trans-to-transfer case installed) and easily measure how much to cut for good engagement with the transfer case input shaft. The 4x4 output shaft on some 4L80E's (like mine) doesn't have a whole lot of engagement with the transfer case input shaft. If you have the option, it would be good to get as much engagement as you can.
