Cladding Repair?

Before long, my truck is getting repainted. No doubt. It's been a NJ truck all its life, so the beautiful front cladding has two gaping holes in it from the license plate, and the back of that lovely piece of tin scratched all the paint off the center of the bumper.

My question is, will a body shop be able to bondo those holes? Someone the other day (not from the board or anything) was saying that since the bumper is not fiberglass, it's impossible to bondo or otherwise repair it! What's the deal?

Head to your local body shop supply store. Ask them for a 2 part epoxy for flexible bumpers. I have the stuff, and have done EXACTLY what you want to do. When we were finished, it was almost impossible to see.

We also built up the corners of the cladding, to be sharp again, they had worn VERY round. The epoxy stuff holds up well, and is almost the same color as the stock black, in my case we painted white afterwards.

Key is to get it as smooth as possible FIRST. When it hardens, it is like rock, and very hard to shape.
