does anyone recognize this problem? TC or tranny?

last night at the track after i hit 3rd gear, when the TC usually locks, mine just let loose, and let the motor spin up to 5000 RPM. im not sure what the hell happened. if ya got a sec, look at this file and tell me what you think. ive never heard of anything like this happening before.

BTW, this run was 13.0 at 109mph with a 2.25 60' time

talk about walking people down. mustanges were leaving a lot harder than me, and as soon as i hit 3000rpm, i was coming by them.

Either way...I'm sorry that you're going to "hafta" get a new TC!

Was there a loud clank and a puff of black smoke associated with this?

What were your other runs? How was Fayetteville last night?

actually, i would be optomistic about this and have it as a reason for an upgrade.. 9/11 sound good to you?

E's nervous about a TC upgrade as he's worried about the extra heat generated. I'd imagine with that huge Tranny cooler that that would almost be a null point though (common e- show them the trick install pics!) More importantly though, I've heard this is a bastard of an operation to complete. :-?

i dont care about the heat, i have a monster cooler, and a deeppan. i drove myclones truck with a 3000rpm 9/11, and thought it was a bit much for the street on a motor that only spins 4,500 rpm. i really think i need a converter, mabe the 2800 9/11 wont be quite as bad. im really just hoping this isnt a problem with the transmission.

i know my times sucked, but isnt 109mph good for low boost? truck seems really fast anyway.

here is the tranny cooler picture ryan.

109mph is really good for a truck having tranny problems on low boost.

I didn't check the run, but may want to test the TC solenoid, check in the run that the ECM is commanding TC lockup as well.

This may be moot but have you changed your fluid lately? If there is a bunch of black stuff in the pan, that is usually from the torque converter. The more in there, the more the TC is likely to be failing. This is all depends on if your ECM is commanding lockup like BG stated before. You know how to do the roadtest? Where you get it in 4th gear at a steady speed and tap the break pedal? RPMs should jump for a second as the TC releases. If this doesn't happen then try to find out if it is electrical or mechanical.

That is a Bis A$$ cooler! Make sure you flush the hell out of it and your cooler lines before you run any new TC.

Jesse's boost would spike almost 5 psi on shifts from 2-3 and 3-4, start knocking and never would let up because of the engine kinda running away. Ends up he had fried the 3-4 stack. All the way down to the metal and burnt completely black. Took 4 oversized cans of carb cleaner just to get all the crud out of the input drum.

Done rambling,

It sound just like what mine was doing! Has the tranny ever been rebuilt? It shouldn't slip and let completly go if it was the TC. If your clearances arent correct on the 3-4 clutch pack then it will cause this flare you felt. Your clearances can be thrown off by excessive wear on the clutches or steels. It may be on it's way out. Mine got so bad that I eventually didn't even have 3rd gear. I replaced mine with 9 clutches and steels instead of the stock count. Third now holds very well. Check your fluids and everything. Send me a pic of what you found in the pan so I can post it. If you have a black film with a burnt smell it's most likely the clutches.

To test the Convertor lock up get on the HW and get crusing at about 2500 rpm and keep it steady. While holding 2500 rpm put your foot on the break and see if the rpm's jump. If they jump then your convertor is disengaging. This is a good thing.

Let us know what the results are. When changing the fluid get some lubeguard and run type F. I think it's a little better than synthetic.

E-RUE,

What kinda tranny temps can you see with this monster cooler?

Peace,
