Here in smalltown Michigan it's illegal to buy imports or something, so everyone around here rices out their Cavaliers, Escorts, and Neons. There's more in GR, but I usually only see them on 28th Street where you can't do anything. I will laugh at them, so they can see me, whenever I can...

Like most of the others, I don't have any problems with any specific type of car. If you have a 4 cyl Honda that gets 50mpg going back and forth to work, great. But don't slap on the stupid parts that a few fast cars have (had?) and think it's the fastest thing ever. Same thing with base model F-bodies (lots of mullets around here too). Yes, Firehawks and SS's are fast, but your "Ram Air" V6 isn't. I'd do the exact same thing to someone putting SyTy stickers all over a 4 cyl S-10/Blazer.

While I'm ranting, that's actually what bugs me most. If you like the SS spoiler, put it on your base Camaro. But don't tarnish the SS's reputation by putting the logos on it (not like you could get real ones anyway). They don't actually affect the appearance of the car, and just add more poser effect... If you want an SS, get one. Don't get the cheap one and spend twice as much to make a crappy imitation of the real thing.

BILL! I know what you are talking about. Same thing here in Jackson, MI.

I seen about everything you could imangine. Seen a V6 on a Simplicity. That thing was just wild but I was rolling laughing.

I know what you mean by the Escorts. Seen a first generation Escort with the "fancy mirror tape" or whatever that crap is called and had Escort scripted on the sides and 18's. Man was that thing tasteless. I yelled "Escorts aren't pimp vechicles!" at the Fiesta of the Fifties in Marshall. Never seen it again. Ever.

Heh, the neighbor in the trailer races lawn mowers. Like he just went to the nationals for it not too long ago. He'll test them out on the road. They're louder than a Honda, and probably as fast. =)

I have a Honda Accord wagon that gets the brunt of the daily duties. It has 125,000 miles and the interior still looks awesome, nothing in there has broken. The sy and ty have issues with small plastic interior parts, and quality. They dont look as good inside as the higher milage Honda. Anyway, this car is dark blue, no hubcaps and tinted windows. It is a fart can magnet. It cracks me up. We will be driving it home and the fast and furious come out and want to race it. They wont mess with the Sy mostly, but want to beat up on a wagon. Cool thing is, the wagon gets them at the light and usually stays ahead

(ok ok...got my flame retardent vest on....fire away)

Its far from a peice of shit. It has 107k on it and I trust is a hell of a lot more than my 98k typhoon. I've beat the shit out of it for 57k miles, and nothing has broken. A 4cyl na motor that can hang at all w/ the v6's and v8's is impressive in my book.

I think your Ty may need a bit of a tuneup. It should pull on a prelude even from a roll easily. I followed a turbo prelude onto the highway one night and he finally raced me...he got brutally destroyed, but he did beat my friends 240sx by a few carlengths...

Just FYI...nice looking car too BTW.

go to any car show and ask around what is the cheapest and easiest car to get in to the 12's.

I think you mean "cheapest and easiest import". It's really hard to beat the cost of getting a GN into the 12s....
Unfortunately Jim, I am going to have to disagree with you big time here!! ANY rare or collector's item vehicle is not going to be competition for the "cheapest and easiest way into the 12s". The $9000+ Grand National certainly fails to qualify in my opinion. Maybe a one-off Turbo Regal without badges that an old lady owns and mistakenly sells for cheap, perhaps, but no way is your run of the mill Turbo Buick going to be the cheapest way into the 12s. I truly and dearly wish it were (I'd own one by now and have another for a daily driver!) but it just isn't so.

OTOH, I do agree with the other poster, the 1st-gen 4-cylinder DSMs are a cheap way into the 12s, but don't discount the 5.0 Mustangs as well, they are quite cheap too and like the DSMs, since they were mass produced there is a big aftermarket with bona fide product and pricing competition which is the key element here, the way I see it.

The Grand National definitely goes fast with class, while the DSMs just go fast (once hopped up).. but when comparing cheapest prices I don't see how the GN comes anywhere close.

I figured someone would call me on that eventually. I realized after I posted that that when you factor in the cost of actually buying a Turbo Regal first, the bang-for-the-buck factor gets hurt badly.

Although, my GN is a recovered theft. It cost me $4,600 as it sits. The mods are a bit more, but it was bone stock when I restored it. Still not as cheap as a used DSM AWD, tho? I sold my supercharged 5.0L GT ragtop for it. The GN responded much better dollar for dollar than the 5.0. But, as you pointed out, the GN has held its value better and as a result probably isn't the cheapest way to go fast now.

What can you do. I'm stuck in the '80s when the 5.0 and the GN were waging the bang-for-the-buck wars.

Thanks for reeling me back to the 21st century....

Jim

Regarding import 4 cylinders...In my opinion there is one KING.....2.6 liter mitsubishi starion (Conquest) engine...why? Because Freddie Fuentes (Puerto Rican engine builder) wanted to build the fastest 4 cyl in the world and he did....."Sakura" is a tube frame mitsubishi Galant with the Starion 2.6 liter inline 4 cyl: with NOS, big turbo running 57 (yes, five, seven)pounds of boost, and alcohol fuel on a STOCK stock stock stock 2.6 block, crank....modded but stock head, intake, ++++, its about 1,000 hp and runs 7 flat in Quarter mile....Check out pics of the car and engine on Amsoil's website...its amazing how much the engine resembles the stock look of the conquest engine....valve cover and all... I will drive "Starquests" and Sy's for the rest of my life!!!!

I think a starion was one of the first fast japanese street racers that really surprized folks at the street races around San Diego. Back in 85, one was out there, lookin stock and taking folks cash. My bud had a Civic wagon with a holley down draft and headers, and I had a VW rabbit. The faster imports at our hang outs seemed to be the VW bugs. Damn things would sometimes pull wheelies...

Nope...I'm from PA. But, the Puerto Ricans really seem to know how to build import draggers. I heard that the IDRC(I think) was trying to get Sakura to visit the some of the recent East coast races. But, apparently the PR drag scene is big enuff to keep em' busy. Kinda a long way to travel too...i guess. Do you know if Sakura is still being raced? I don't have any recent(last 6months) info. on it.

Its been snowing on and off here for 2 weeks, and I'm dying to drive the Sy. But I don't wanna drive it in the salt!!!!!!1
