Front and Rear Diff fluid change

Went and picked up 2 quarts of Mobil 1 75W gear lube. Is that enough for the front and rear?

How much goes in each?

Also grabbed a gasket for the rear diff.

I was thinking transfer case, which holds 1.5 quarts of ATF.

I think I used 2 1/2 quarts total. I don't remember for sure. Stick your finger in the hole - if you can't feel the fluid - add more :)

I did the X-case also when I did mine.

Remember there is no drain for the front diff. You have to suck out the old fluid. You can buy a fluid pump for around 10 bucks if you don't have one.

Thanks Dave. Guess I'll go get another quart of the gear oil for the diffs.

You used ATF fluid on the transfer case tho right?

The ~2.5 quarts is just front/rear diffs?

The rear diff holds 3.9 pints or 1.95 quarts and the front diff holds 2.6 pints or 1.3 quarts. As Dave mentioned, you will have to get a suction gun to get the fluid out of the front diff. The transfer case holds 3.0 pints or 1.5 quarts of ATF. Info courtesy of: http://www.sytyauthority.net/ under "maintenance"... ;) HTH's

HAHA, this is great. First place I went to I bought 2 qts of the shit, @ 8.99, Pepboys

Then I went out to hunt down some lubeguard(for the tranny), and picked up another bottle @ 7.99, Murrays

The last place I went to, Autozone, it was $6.99. WTF

Thanks for the info Mike, I somehow missed it when I looked at sytyauth.

I'll have to invest in a pump next time around, as I'm taking all this crap to a local tranny shop to get done.

"In other news"... had the ty up on a hoist, looking at my exhaust problem...and saw that I put grade 8.8 bolts in for the propshaft. What you gotta say about that Mike? They aren't 10.9, but should be strong enough, eh?

Coming soon and hopefully doable in a weekends time....

Hey, what's the deal Scott? I know that you are recovering from your accident but, if you can tear out your dash you should be able to change your own fluids :p !

Well, grade 8.8 is good for ONLY 120,000 psi tensile strength so what's 30,000 psi between friends  ?

Ya, its just crawling around under the truck isn't all that, right now.
If I had a hoist, it'd be different.

I don't know where you heard that I "can" tear my dash out, you have much more confidence in me than I do. :D

I think both are pretty strong. I doubt either would give before the propshaft would.

I'll buy a set off you, only if you have them nitrided. LOL j/k :D

Re: Front and Rear Diff fluid change

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I think my front diff is low on fluid.

Two questions:
Should I try and suction out the remaining lube before I top it off?

I noticed the fluid capacity of the front diff is 1.3 quarts. Does one just fill the differential until the fluid level is up to the fill port?

Thanks,

Re: Front and Rear Diff fluid change

If you are gettin dirty you may as well get all the old fluid out.

Just fill it until it runs out the hole and then plug it. u r correct.

Re: Front and Rear Diff fluid change

Ok I was doing ball joints and decided since I was under the truck what the hell.... I'd check the front diff..... Hold on a sec I'm gonna puke..... THERE'S TRANSMISSION FLUID IN THERE!!!!! UHHH I'm getting sick again just thinking about it.... How bad of news is that?? Brake it to me easy guys, there might be a Typhoon on here for sale if this shit keeps up!

Re: Front and Rear Diff fluid change

It may not be the end of the world. Alot of manual gearboxes use ATF, so I doubt any serious damage has been done (as opposed to no lubrication at all). Empty it out and flush it with gear oil until you get as much ATF out as possible. At least everything will be nice and clean.

Re: Front and Rear Diff fluid change

Well I can say for sure it's been that way for at least 4k miles...... I can also say I know someone who is getting my size 13 foot in his ass for this one!

It might be Redline MTL or something like that :D. Other fluids are also red not only ATF.
Does it smell like ATF or like a gear oil? Dave

Rear Differential = 1.95 Quarts with 4oz GM#1052358 additive (SAE 80W-90 gear lubricant) (Some use 75w90 Synthetic GL-5 rated)

Front Differential = 1.3 Quarts (SAE 80W-90 gear lubricant) (Some use 75w90 Synthetic GL-5 rated)

Transfer Case = 1.5 Quarts (Dexron III)

Transmission = Pan only 5 Quarts, Full system 12 Quarts (Dexron III with Lubeguard Red Bottle additive)

Mobile1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75W-90 is what I use for the F/R Diffs.
