I cant give you a solid answer either, but the 98 Front diff is only cross compatible with 1997-2001 at least as far as non-ZR2 trucks are concerned.

Im using a 00 front diff out of a bravada just have to change pasz side axle tube.

You would need to run '97 and up CV shafts as well. Old style bolt on, newer ones are slip on.

It's the same front differential all the way up to 04. You'll need to change the axles (and convert to AWD setup)as the CV shafts changed to push in during the later years instead of flange bolt style. ZR2 diffs are the same as regular S10s, the CVs were slightly longer to accommodate the 3" additional width.
