Re: Rebuilding a 4l80e

How is that? If you make that much power that you start slipping bad, put upgraded clutches in it. If you shear off an input shaft, put a good one in it. They are proven to stand up, not just one or two. Sure if you have all that money laying around and want all the extra insurance thats fine. Just because it has aftermarket parts in it doesnt mean it may not break just the same as a stock one. Parts fail, thats racing. Saying lines like that saves people money and time that they would otherwise waste out of fear.

I had mine openend up because of a stuck pressure regulator valve in the pump. I wanted to see how everything was holding up in there and couldnt believe just how good it was. The clutches show minimal wear, all the hard parts look good as new, etc. That trans went in the truck in 2005, its been 15-20,000 miles on the street, never getting driven without running it hard. Its been down the track a bunch of times and from all that abuse it looked better inside than I could have hoped. That says something for how good they hold up.

There is an aftermarket for them because they are so popular. They hold so much power, they have overdrive, and have lock up converter capability. They are a dream come true for guys who actually make a lot of horsepower and still drive it out on the street. If you made aftermarket transmission parts you would obviously want to make parts for a popular transmission so you can sell lots of your parts and make lots of money.

I know how great of a tranny they are. I'll quote your post again so you can remember what you said...

A stock 4l80e just gets comfortable around 800hp.

So I should be good to what, 900hp in both my trucks? I mean, if there just getting comfortable at 800, 900 should be ok right?

Yep that's an 80e or a TH400 (same without OD) in terms of the drum.

My point about the drum is this. If it fails you will have a very bad day and possibly be shopping for a new leg/foot or even worse. Can the stock drum hold power, yea MOST of the time. The new drum isn't really a lot stronger IMO its just aluminum spinning and exploding won't go nearly as far outward as steel would.

Fight fight fight!

:D

It would be fine at 1500 hp for some time, then it will find the weak link and fail. May be a short time but so could a 500 hp setup depending on use, maintenance, trans brake etc etc.

Besides from your time slips you have a looong way to go before worrying about what 900 hp does to any of your trannys.

True but careful, saying they are same except overdrive isnt necessarily true. They do use the same clutch discs in the forward and direct drum, but the drums themselves are different as far as I could find. You would want to make sure you get an upgrade for an 80e not a 400.

Wow.

Build a truck from junk-yard parts, attend ONE Nats, and develop this amount of "attitude"??? WTF, dude? I've only responded to one of your [very early] posts. You replied with a "yea, I know what I'm doing....." response, so I've ignored you ever since. (I forgot that 24 year-olds know everything. I shouldn't have bothered). But this attitude towards a long-time, respected member is un-warranted and is going to get the "DaveP response"..

Here's a hint: Attitude doesn't make you fast. Preparation, research, experimentation, along with some money for the above does. A lot of peeps on here are faster than you. Guess what? They don't care. And peeps that are slower don't care either. Personally, after this post of yours tonight, I don't care if your junk runs 8's. It's still junk, and its owner is an ass-hat, so I don't give a f uck what it runs, or what or who it can beat.

Attitude will loose you a lot more respect than it will win you races. Good Night, and Good Luck. DaveP

The only thing he does is back up his work by stepping up to the plate when someone calls him out. But maybe I'm just partial. There is a difference between attitude and confidence. Not his fault someone believes a 4L80E can handle an easy 800hp. With a 10.7 et doesnt sound like he(try me) is talking from experience. Oh and I dont think a forged motor is junkyard parts

You haven't ignored me. I posted a thread(2 weeks ago) asking a question and you answered it via PM. I appreciated the response and thanked you.

I find it funny that you mention me going to only one NATS and that Im an ass-hat. While I cant be 100% sure of this, Im pretty sure EVERYONE there had nothing but good things to say about my truck(s) there and they all thought that while I was a very sarcastic person, i was overall a nice guy. Just ask the Utah guy would hit the van. He was able to drive home because of the radiator I gave him for free, even though he offered me money. Or ask the other two people I gave radiators to that needed them back home. Did you make it to NATS? I didnt get a chance to meet you. If you registered with TJ, your welcome for the sticker(s) he gave you. I contacted him and made him 130+ stickers to give out at NATS.... I must be an ass-hat doing that. And who cares if I have only been to one NATS. There are tons of people who have been here for a long time that have only been to one or zero NATS. The only reason I went to this last one was because I dont think that there will ever be a closer one. But now that I have been to one, I want to go again.

I have never had anything bad to say about you and still dont. You are free to express how you feel about me if you want.

I posted that to backup the work that i have done on my truck. I dont care if I used junkyard parts on my truck though. My junkyard motor lasted me 6months at a proven 540whp(was completely my fault that it failed), my junkyard tranny have lasted the 15,000 miles I have put on it on top of the 90,000 miles that were on it when i got it, my $45 junkyard hydroboost has been working flawlessly for 12,000 miles, and I have all the same stuff on my Ty too. While there are places that I need to put lots of money into(like my tranny), Im not about to drop all kinds of $$$$$ because Im afraid of the word junkyard. Shit, I have probably put more miles on my truck with junkyard parts than anyone else with an LS swap.

While I could have just shrugged off the comment about me not having worry about 900hp for a loooong time, F that. He doesnt know shit about the power my truck makes. As I have shown in the past, I dont let people talk shit about my work and in the future I will do the same thing. I dont want to bicker back and forth online about it. Our trucks are about as similar as two LS trucks will get, so calling him out makes perfect sense to me. I mean apparently he knows what 800hp does to a stock tranny so he shouldnt have anything to worry about.

Re: Rebuilding a 4l80e

I was registered and paid for attending Nats 11. But I realized that other than a handful of OG's that I've known and respected for up to a decade, that the majority of attendees were going to be punks with attitudes. I made the decision that spending the $600-800 for gas and other expenses "wasn't worth it". Looks like I made the right decision.

Syclones and Typhoons have turbocharged 4.3L V6 engines. I don't give a shit what's under the hood of your junk-yard Syclone. It's NOT a V6. It's just another Junkyard Dog. Sorry. I'm not impressed.

I don't care if your impressed. There will always be people that don't like what someone does. Just because DaveP doesn't like my truck doesn't mean that I'm going to stop doing what ive been doing.

All I did was defend my work and you came on here acting like a "punk"

Let me spell it out:

NO ONE GIVES A F U C K !!!

I had a response for this but I'm not gonna say it.

Try Me... Sorry for the "attitude" that I apparently had in my response to your post. It pisses me off when people talk about my stuff when they don't know anything about it. 800hp can be two clicks away on my boost controller for all anyone knows. If you can refrain from making negative comments about my truck I would appreciate it, unless it contructive. if not, I stand my my previous post about the race.

DaveP... Grow up please.

I think that Try Me was giving ME shit about having no HP and crap track times, not you.

My "fight, fight, fight!" comment worked!

BTW, drag races like that are only cool when each truck is hitched to the other :D

Back to the transmissioNs guys, mega props for fast trucks.

Re: Rebuilding a 4l80e

No need to shout, turn it into a pissing match, etc. You've got 11.5 in your sig, I've got 10.7 in mine with slip and video. I made a comment that if you look in the transgo shift kit manual that I installed in my 4l80e, it even has almost word for word that quote "these transmissions just start to get comfortable at 800hp". If you want I can scan it for you. Im sure they know more than both of us about 4l80e's.

You attacked me for making that comment. I gave you an unbiased, hands on from experience, no nasty-ness response. You attacked again and got a smart-ass attitude with that "I'll quote your post again so you can remember what you said..." comment as if i dont know what I said or couldnt scroll up to read it again.

I gave you some smart-ass back. Sorry you couldnt handle it. If you cant take it dont start it. Let me tell you if you react that way every time someone gives you crap about something on the internet, sell your computer cause that IS the internet. Especially since you, just like me, have done to these trucks what most members feel is blasphemy.

If anyone else knows what your truck is capable of, its probably the guy who has had one with a similar setup. It runs 10's? 9's? 8's? Put up the slip otherwise its bench racing and that doesnt mean anything. I've got mine right there with a video. So start turning those clicks on your boost controller, and maybe you'll get to meet "the king" at a future Nats :)

That was a cool race on a very hot day. One cobra elbow de-installation made the difference, or he was sand bagging. Who will ever know? LOL

That is impressive right there.

Who else can claim being the King of the Nats?

I thought I saw something on here about the King of the 2011 nats, i'd like to know who won.

I tryed to keep him off the throne but he dropped the sand bags and kicked my ass.

Hopefully we get to line 'em up again one day!

That it was! When that exhaust crossover blew off at the top end i thought my day was done! Turned out to be the best thing that happened all day.
