It looks like you have to remove the valve body to get this stupid little pin out:

I'm just wondering if there is another way to go about this(other than cutting and welding the shaft)..

I picked up this tranny used and was told that it worked well. I'd prefer not to tamper with the valve body until I road test the tranny and verify its condition.

If I do need to pull the valve body how bad of a job is it? Will I need any new gaskets or anything to put it back together?

Re: Sonax Short Shift Shaft

Valve body is an easy job - there are 21 bolts in there plus the electrical connectors. There is the feed pipe and a few pipe clamps that the 21 bolts hold in place so it is all neat. Very obvious.

10mm socket I think for 16 of them and 8mm for the 5 bolts on the Pressure Switch Assembly and it should all come off easily. 12 ftlbs to torque it all back up - double check that number. Might be inch-lbs.

As for the gasket, that might tear and you might end up having to clean it which is again an easy job, just might be a little time consuming. I would have them to hand if you plan to pull the VB. A new rebuild would be fine, an older one - more than likely, the gaskets will split.

Make sure you get the right year for the gasket.

The thing stopping that pin from coming out is the separator plate. Once the VB is off, that will be free to move. If you do remove it, make sure the trans is upside down and level or you might lose the check balls - they will be in the case. There should be 8.

Or...

If you are feeling brave, can you cut a corner off that separator plate or perhaps bend it to make it easy to access that pin? Even a small drill would work if you were careful, just to remove the pin...but... then the pin can fall out in future so probably not a geat idea. In fact, forget it. :D

I have the short shift shaft in mine but the builder I last used installed it.

Re: Sonax Short Shift Shaft

You installing it in the Ty?

Why not install it as is but no prop shaft. So no need to clear thr prop.

If it works, drop the VB and then swap out that piece? Depends on how you plan to load test it. :dunno:

Thanks for the info. I thought about installing it without front prop just to test.. I also have a TransGo shift kit so it would make the most sense to do everything at once. Maybe I will just cut/weld the existing shaft, road test the tranny, then install the short shift shaft and shift kit all at the same time..

Re: Sonax Short Shift Shaft

So I decided to just cut and weld the shaft for now.. I'll swap it out sometime down the road when I put the shift kit in...

I'm assuming thats close enough since you really can't get any closer than that...??

Only other thing you need to do is your electrical connector to the trans. It is really close to the prop shaft so you need to take off the cover and then fill all the wires with epoxy resin. Pull the wires so they clear and let the epoxy set.
