TC Lockup with F.A.S.T.?

I tried to search for this a couple times - came up empty.

I swear I remember reading a thread that you need something in addition to F.A.S.T. to make the Torque Converter lock up? I drove my Sy earlier this week and I swear mine ain't lockin' up. Always the possibility that I could be wrong. :-?

FWIW I have a Roadmaster built trans with a 3K 9/11.

Any help?

TIA

You are correct.
There are several out there.
I believe the B&M lockup unit is the choice of most.

Thanks for that info Rick.

I know I can install it, but is this thing relatively easy to use/adjust (Going by the pic, it looks simple enough)?

Does this allow you to lock up in 4th gear at a certain mph? Just curious as to what to expect.

And any advice on what RPM/MPH would be best for lock up on the street, also the strip? Maybe better to leave it unlocked to race? I don't know.

I have McCoy's Supermotor - Stage3 Vortecs, 512 cam, 72BB Turbo etc. if it matters. Sorry for all the Q's.

I am using the B&M...nothing serious to install. Driving around town I lock it around 45 mph. At the track (or racing on the street) I lock it at 5,300rpm in third. That has given me my best times. You will get the feel of were to adjust the switch in ralationship to your required lockup speed quickly.

Just to be a dick gen 7 DFI requires nothing but a relay to control the converter. :D

Ick on that though, cuz there's no MPH input, and you have to use a 4th gear switch

Thanks John. Sounds straightforward enough. If you're locking it at 5,300/3rd gear, what RPM are you shifting at?

I have the B&M and have never hooked it up. Are you guys just tapping into the TC lines there at the ECU ( i have FAST ). I read the directions but just seem as if you could do it easier by going into the original wiring harness.

I have the old atr electric. it locks up third and forth with the throw of a switch before the run. I need all 4 gears to make it through the quarter. mine runs over a half second slower withput locking up. the b&M looks nice. If I had to replace mine that's the one I would look at. I think if you lock this one up after 55 it would do the same thing as mine but you wouldn't have to remember to have the switch in the right position depending on what you were doing

Hey John, you mention you lock your TC at 5300 in third, have you tried to lock it in 2nd at 5300. It just seems like that would work better for the engine, you'd still be in the power band but with an easier gear to pull it and you'd also have a hole nother gear for more mph. What do you or anyone else think about this theory?

a little clarity here. when we talk about locking up in a certain gear here is the way it works. you ask about locking it up in second gear. are you talking about when it shifts into or out of second? The converter lockup does not come into play on the 1 to 2 shift which is after 55 mph. were you talking about it locking up for the 1 to 2 shift? It does lockup on the 2 to 3 shift and the 3 to 4 shift

this is something I have never given too much thought on. I just push the switch down and launch. even if I don't lock the computer mine won't shift into overdrive unless I throw the switch again to make it go into 4th. I will tell you that mine is about a half second slower with everything set the same when I don't lock it up. 10.97 as opposed to 10.39 , so it's definitely worth doing. That's why if I had to replace the atr system I would go to the b&m like johns since it just locks at a speed. IF I'm wrong I apologize and learned something myself. I don't think I am wrong though

100in6 what I'm talking about is instead of locking the tc in 3rd lock it in 2nd at the same rpm and yes I'm talking about using the bm unit. you would just have to figure out what mph 5300rpm is in 2nd and then set the bm unit to lock at that mph. "In theory" that has to give you more mph than locking it in third at the same rpm!

one of us needs to try this

hmmm...

I'm thinking. I must be missing something here.

it's either locked or not. how would you lock it up in different gears and speeds. mine is either locked on not locked.

maybe I don't know how this frickin dthing really works... but I'm gonna find out today I can guar-rahn-tee

100in6 the way the BM unit works is, it's a small box that connects to the converter plug on the tranny, it has a knob, when turned counter clock wise the lockup speed/mph is reduced, when turned clockwise the lockup speed/mph is increased so basically you can lockup the converter at any mph assuming you're atleast in 2nd gear. I don't know how the atr unit works.

Oh I get what you're saying. figure out what rpm and in what gear you want to lock it up at ant then figure out what MPH is and set the speed to correspond with it. Mine is either locked or unlocked. period.

it took a while but I finally got it. never claimed I was quick!!
