4l60e is a 700r4 but with electronic controls..

same strength/gearing (I think)

4l80e is much stronger and more expensive..

93' i believe came with a 700r4 a stock 4.3 willnot break it, hell both of my 4.3s havent hurt their trannies (one 700r4 and one 4l60e, total of about 220k miles on them to)

A 700R4 is a 4L60. The 4L60E is the electronically shifted version. If you put an E in place of a regular 700R4, you'll need to add the ECM from a newer vehicle to control the tranny. The 4L80E is another electronic one, which is different. I have no idea if/what you've have to do to make it work, but it might require some modifications...

The 4L80 Is an electronic heavy duty overdrive trans, used in one tons and controlled by a computer. It has the strength of a turbo 400. For short it is a turbo 400 with overdrive and a computer

Ryan (OddfireV6) has a 4L80 in his Ty. It requires serious mods to make it fit and make it fast, a computer to controll it and serious horsepower to gain advantage with it...

Hey Doom,
160K miles? 3-4 clutch pack is toast.
There is a few things that can cause it. Circuit leaks, release springs in the input drum hanging up. But Most likely is that the clutches and steels have worn enough that the clearances are high making it take longer for the shift to complete(piston has to move farther before the clutch stack grabs). A shift kit is nice in that it will basically increase fluid flow and pressure to certain areas. Heavier springs will require more pressure to build in a circuit before the valve opens. Bigger surface area of a valve face (example is the type "B" 2nd accumulator in the syty valvebody) will allow more pressure as well. Opening the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th feed holes slightly allow more flow which will complete the shift quicker(not sooner). A combination of both is what makes up shift kits. Unfortunately, a good shift kit won't overcome greater clutch stack clearances(due to wear or poor/lazy workmanship).
As far as putting in a 4L60E or 4L80. Unless you want to invest mucho dinero, stick with the 700. Its an awsome all around tranny if its built right.

I picked up a 4L60E, 1998 with 76k on it for $400 bucks.

The computer is where is gets expensive.. unless you go the stock computer route.. Turbo Tony I think is playing with chipping on that right now.. I bought the one Hartman sells.. it is pimp. But then we all know how low budget those Canadians are. Hard to argue with a guy running 10.70's

It is not a direct bolt in.. there are few things you have to change.

If you are interested in doing the swap you can email me directly and I can share it all with you. It is all straight forward... there are some advantage for using the 4L60E... that TV cable is a pain in the ass and if you want to change shift points.. you don't have to crawl underneath the truck and pull out that "govnah" assembly.

I just wanted the flexibility that comes with the tranny. For what I have .. about an extra 2k over a regular 4L60 build.

My advice...keep it simple, replace the 700 with another 700, you can't be dissapointed with 160,000 miles especially if you didn't have a real trans cooler with fan. The 4L80e is bigger, stronger, and electric but you don't need it unless you like wasting money. Now, if you intend to build a retarded 800HP 1000LBS TQ truck then its worth the money but not until you get crazy. Check the junkyards too, just make sure you put a cooler with a fan on it...
