Re: Which torque converter for 80e

I went with Chris at Circle D. I've been very impressed with the quality and performance of his products. He doesn't have any issues about locking his stuff up at WOT. Forget about rated stall speeds; you need to talk to somebody who knows what they're doing, who can apply their experience and expertise, in order to get the results you are looking for. A converter in one vehicle combo can stall thousands of RPM differently than the same converter in another vehicle combo.

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

Three years have gone by since this thread has been updated. Do we have any new reasonably priced proven options in the 3000 stall range? I really don't want to spend $1000 on a converter.. Half that I could handle but $1000 for a converter is just going to hurt...

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

i just got a PTC for a 80E for 750 single disc lock up , cannot lock at WOT though. Its in a turbo LQ4, but i am happy with it so far. PTC is getting popular with the Turbo Buick guys as well.

Other wise I would look into a circle D, if you have the cash.

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

I ended up doing a presicion, after getting it restalled to 2800, it drives real nice. it does stall higher than rated when against the brakes, but it launches real hard. I am not disapointed with my decision.

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

My PTC 10” just starts shuttering in Lockup, 4 and ½ years most of that time on jack stands.
I have been doing wot lockup , not sure if I have the single or multi clutch.

I plan to send it to PTC for rebuild.

Any one used FTI converter ?

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

I have finally saved up enough cabbage to get a torque converter for my 80E so I called the Big 3 (Precision, CircleD, Yank).

Precision says triple disc $1,076

Circle D says triple disc $1,200

This is where I'm confused:

Yank says I don't want a triple disc and that I want a single disc. He says my truck doesn't have enough power for a triple disc (estimated 400-500 range) and when it goes to lock up it would be like throwing a parachute out the back of my truck. He also says a single disc will give me better 60ft times. Cost: $870

The truck will be mostly street driven with an occasional visit to the track. Trans is mostly stock with a Trans-Go shift kit.

Thoughts???

Trying to make the best decision.

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

That doesn't sound right to me. Lockup means the converter is at the speed where the stator and rotor are at 95% so lockup should feel like lockup. It's down to the stall rating, not the lockup disc. When it locks up, the driveline is directly connected.

Try and find a bad review of Circle-D. Call them up and see what they say. :2cents:

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

My Precision locks just fine. In fact, in my research, I was told told a multi disk CAN be locked at full throttle where a single disk wasn't recommended because it could slip and burn and not be warrantied.
Oh, and i got the 5 disk...

Re: Which torque converter for 80e

I went with the 10 3/4" multi disk circle d converter. I was told the same thing as the multi disk will lock up a wot as the single disk is not recommended. With the amount of torque these trucks make the multi disk was a safe bet since I want to lock it up under full throttle just cause I can.
