Has anyone tried 1/3rd Sea Foam in the gas tank and just drive around?

Was thinking about doing that three times rather than the 1/3rd in brake booster, 1/3rd in tank, 1/3rd in oil deal. I don't like the idea of too much at once flooding the cat with old oil and Sea Foam.

Once done with the can (3 fill ups): Change oil, change both PCV's, change O2 sensor, and replace valve seals (needed to be done 13-14+ years ago). Right now the PCV in the rear is full of oil, oil mist can be seen from the vent tube to the filter box (drvr side), and the Ty farts smoke at startup sometimes (just FYI).

I'm gonna do Sea Foam for sure but I think letting the injectors spray will not only clean the injectors, but also evenly dish out the Sea Foam. What do guys think?

Rex - sorry but im confused on what your asking?? Are you asking if its wise to use seafoam?

I have put in entire cans in my gas tank and not only on my ty. I have put a 1/3 through brake booster and have also purchased the seafoam intake cleaner and gone crazy with that. I do it once ever 6-9 months give or take on my Tahoe because that's my daily driver as for the ty maybe once a year. 100k on my tahoe and i started doing as soon as i bought it with 64k miles 4 years ago. Changed plugs once at 90k when i did a few tune up and nothing more. I think that stuff is amazing!!

Sea foam in the oil I recommend. It has cured many sticky lifters. I never found it to clean injectors or intakes nearly as good as other products like GM Top End cleaner and Techron.

I dump the whole can in a warm engine and let it run for 5 minutes. Drain oil and replace filter. I do it once again, but for 10 minutes. I would not put an engine cleaner in and leave it for sure.

Ill never put it in my gas tank. I think it led to my fuel pump going out within a week of doing it. I wanna say it was actually less than 3 days later that it went out.

Re: Has anyone tried 1/3rd Sea Foam in the gas tank and just drive around?

My concern is this acetone-esque chemical could do a lot of damage by:

1) drying non-fuel rated rubber (booster hose+valve seals).
2) causing heat spots in the cats by the chemical itself or the byproduct it creates.
3) bonding/filming on metal parts (if put in the oil) causing premature wear..

One theory i have is a similar product was used on this Ty in the 90's. Valvoline Redondo Beach said it was "injector and top end cleaner." Metal IV hung to the hood with hose attached to the fuel rail. Tons of white smoke out the back similar to Sea Foam. Shortly after the Ty would smoke randomly on start-up and has been doing it ever since. Nothing questionable other than that has been done to this car since most of the service was done by Culver City Cadillac.

I'll look into that GM Topend cleaner to. Thx for your guys input. I'll let you know what i do and the results are when I get to it.

That's what I was looking for. I know it's a good product just wondering about the experience was when putting it just in the tank.

Berryman's makes a kit, sold at AutoZone (no I'm not condoning the usage of AutoZone, I used to work there, fuggk them!). If your in the military like myself, you can get 10% off at AutoZone. Any way, for like 30 bucks (might have gone up) they have a 3 part kit (Fuel, TB Cleaner, Intake Cleaner) it has all the tubing needed to do everything, a "How To" video, and if you ask me, they make a damn fine product! I'd try them out! Aside from this, get some "MAS Cleaner" and clean off your intake sensors, MAP, Speed Density or MAS, and do the kit. New air filter or clean your K&N (or cleanable style filter) along w/ cleaning or replacing your PCV filters, and I'm not to keen on the SyTy's but if it's got a EGR valve (I'd hope not) then pull it off, take some carb cleaner and do it to that as well. But yeah, if you wanna make sure it's all gravy man, drop your trans pan, put a new filter in, top it off w/ some Valvoline High Milage Trans fluid or some Synthetic. Rip the front/rear dif cover's and put new gaskets/fluid in those bad dogs (I'd recommend some Royal Purple or Mobile 1 Sythetic), change the oil w/ sum'n sweet and your SyTy will def give you a stiffy on the next ride!

Started to improve right away.

We added another 10 gals to the tank, and put in the rest of the can of seafoam. After driving it 100 miles the next day, it was running perfectly, and has been ever since.

Your results, and opinion, may vary. But we avoided removing the plenum on a very original <10,000 mile ZR-1. Which was the point.
Almost anything is worth a try. I've always heard nothing but good from Seafoam. I personally don't use it, but haven't heard anyone wish bad upon it. I like Lucas and Berrymans. More than anything, I believe it's just going to be user preference.

Re: Has anyone tried 1/3rd Sea Foam in the gas tank and just drive around?

Some more info GM Top End Cleaner - Different Decarbon Technique

That turkey baster technique sounds like what I prob need to do with ALL the years of inhaling oil through the PCV. I'll try to do the less aggressive techniques multiple times before oil change, then one day do that.

I think I have a good idea of the steps that would be comfortable for me to do: Put 1/2 the can of Sea Foam in the gas and drive around until next fill up. Then pull the hose from the brake booster intake side and put a scrap hose to the intake. Use the other 1/2 of Sea Foam (Brake Booster Hose method/Flood it once etc...). Then change oil,oil filter, O2 sensor, both PCVs, and spark plugs. Also clean (by hand) TB (with TB cleaner), EGR, oiled hoses, crossover, filter, etc. Then have Dave replace the valve seals. Maybe I'll do the hand cleaning when Dave is doing the seals because the intercooler will be off. Randomly it DOES idle smooth. Hopefully it idles CONSISTENTLY smooth after. I'm betting it will.

I put about a 3rd in tank and 3rd in intake. Just waiting for the sun to go down at my dads house then I'll start the smoke show. I'll let you guys know tomorrow how it turns out. I had a $10 off coupon at Pep Boys so I thought I'd do it today. I'll do it one more time before we change the valve seals.

Re: Has anyone tried 1/3rd Sea Foam in the gas tank and just drive around?

I've had some great luck with seafoam. I know a lot of products don't do what they claim but based on a recommendation I gave it a try. I was working on a 96 grand prix with a 3.8 swap that wouldn't idle worth a crap. I put 1/3 seafoam in the gas tank and sprayed 1/3 directly into the throttle body. After about 10 mins of idling and smoking out the exhaust the idle went perfectly smooth and 50,000 miles later the car still idles smooth. Maybe it was coincidence

Re: Has anyone tried 1/3rd Sea Foam in the gas tank and just drive around?

OK this stuff is legit,

Drove it hard (very hard) after the initial @-15 min of waiting (@2K idle) smoke screen. I put a bit more through the booster hose to rinse. So I think I have about 1/6th left. I pulled a Spy Hunter on a Land Rover sittin' on 20's. "Now you see me...now you don't!" It revs a ton smoother. We'll see the next couple days. The jury is still out, but I will do it again since it absolutely cleaned up the high rpm strangled feeling. I don't have to rely on higher gears to run smooth. It feels good to redline. When I was coming into my garage this past week + it would chug chug chug up, just now smooth pull.

I hate horse-shit products but I HAD to just give it a try because I thought there must be a lot of oil due to the many years of not addressing the valve seals and no way in hell would I ( or Dave ) want to open an unopened original engine JUST to clean oil. I'll daily drive it and give you guys updates if there's anything interesting. Next, the hand cleaning and new parts on the list.

EDIT:
Heres a vid of 1/2 of test drive. It's artifacty because I cranked the exposure.

For you locals this is in Rolling Hills on Crest. I went one way on Crest and turned around before the Rolling Hills Gate then past the house going the other way, turned around before the twisties and came back.

Re: Has anyone tried 1/3rd Sea Foam in the gas tank and just drive around?

Still good. Here's a 5min vid of the dash, and yes I know the trip odometer doesn't work properly:

I'm gonna see if I can replace the rear PCV and clean that hose a little. I'll take pic so you'll see what I'm talking about. I know I'm gonna have to do this again when we do the valve seals, but the PCV's aren't expensive so...
