Re: Power steering

I tried belt dressing but it made it worse. I have another power steering cooler some place in my garage that I plan on swapping with mine when I find it. It gets hot, so I don't think it's plugged. As long as it doesn't squeak like crazy, I'll slowly work at it. One of these days I'll find it, hopefully.

Re: Power steering

Does having a ZQ8 steering box have anything to do with it? I'm to the point now where I'm goin to lock it up in the garage and throw away the keys. New Goodyear belt, wire brush to ALL pulleys and cleaned with soapy water. Found my alternator pulley was not aligned, too far to the rear. Took the lock washer and put it on the back side of the pulley and now it's perfect.

I also changed out my ball joints, adjusted the 2nd steering box and I still have tons of steering slop. I also have a coolant leak and can't find it anywhere.

Re: Power steering

Sounds like the belt is losing traction on a pulley when the power steering is needed most (tension on ps pulley). Make sure they're perfectly lined up, put a straightedge across if you can. Make sure your fan clutch isn't going out, that adds a boatload of tension (don't change it if it's ok). Another thing to check is your alternator support. If it doesnt have the back support the pulley will get in and out of alignment and could cause a noise. Last thing I can think of is make sure you're not using a Gatorback belt. My personal preference, others like them. I just think they're stupid since they reduce the contact area. A normal belt is best. Don't give up on the whore!

Re: Power steering

I never did put the brace back on the alternator when I put the engine in. Hopefully I still had it or il have to go to the junkyard today or tomorrow.

Re: Power steering

Maybe I missed it but, is the PS pulley fully seated on the shaft?

Re: Power steering

Never mind on the pic, I went to the junkyard and found one, didnt help at all.

Replaced so far:
ZQ8 steering box
steering pump
3 different belts (only have 2 now, Dayco and Goodyear, sounds much better with Dayco)
belt tenioner
idler pulley
power steering pulley
power steering lines, from box to cooler then cooler to pump
reinstalled alt bracket
ball joints
Jeep steering shaft
pitman arm
idler arm
electric fan conversion

Everything is straight with each other, checked with a straight edge. The alt, power steering pump and crank pulley were checked.

New thing I just found out. If Im turning and it squeaks (which it will), if I give it just a hair of gas, the noise goes away. Should I change out the power steering line from pump to box or should I just take this POS in and have someone else try and figure it out?

Re: Power steering

If the Dayco sounds better and the Goodyear is a Gatorback then I would put money on a slipping belt. Take the belt off and roll each pulley to see if they're not wobbling. Take the water pump pulley off clean the back and the pump front to make sure it's flat flat. Beyond that is beyond me (over the Internet). If nothing works and everyones out of ideas I'd say yea, take it to a mechanic.

Re: Power steering

One thing it started doing is if the trams is in drive, when it down shifts to firsts it squeaks. If its in OD, it doesn't do it.

All of the pulleys spin straight, watched them several times.

Re: Power steering

Got to the point where I thought it was the bearing hub and replaced it. Well, it's not the bearing hub. Next thought was front diff going south, oil looked good. Next in line was the xfer case. Then I found something:

The bolt right above the prop shaft that holds the access cover into the trans came loose and was rubbing. Going to eat now then fix the problem. **** me, a couple hundred bucks spent and it's a stupid ****ing bolt!!

I had a mechanic of 30 years helping me out and he was stumped because we both thought it was steering related, then diff, then xfer case.
