Smoke from the Oil Dip Stick?

Pulled in to fill up at the gas station, popped the hood to check the oil and when I pulled the dip stick smoke poured out!!??? Have never noticed this before, I did just do 35 miles on the highway at 65mph...... Any thoughts on this guys??

Thats blow-by. It means that combustion gasses are leaking past the rings and getting into the crankcase.

Do a compression check..

well. it''s close to the manifolds, so it can as well be just oil being burned from inside the tube.

i think he would probably find smoke if he removed the oil cap too, but who knows.


simple solution, stop checking your oil after you've just driven the truck

Like everything "it depends" but if the PVC valves aren't working he'll get normal blow-by built up in the crankcase and when the dipstick is pulled out it comes. Checking when cold is fine but it sounds like some diag is order. Thinking the worse, If this is a new situation maybe it was steam.

EDIT: On second thought if it was steam then the oil would start to show milky.

If its a thin whispy smoke it is more than likely just vapors.

If it is thick, blueish and billowing then you have major issues.
