Pump for rear IC system

I'm gonna be putting an icechest and CCHE in the bed of the truck here soon, and was curious what pump you guys think I might need to push this system? I'll be running the larger upper IC (ATR/Conley style), a large ice chest with submerged cooler/lines, an external CAS lower CCHE with dual fans, and xx feet of 3/4" to the upper IC.

I've been looking at washdown pumps for boats (like this) and they seem to be the best bet, but could a shur-flo keep up with 3/4"-1" hose going from the bed to the upper IC? What should I focus on? Best performance @ high pressure or low pressure? Flow rate? Self priming length?

Matt (Hoover), what intercooler pump are/were you guys running on your truck for the remote intercooler?

Any help appreciated.

Re: Pump for rear IC system

I was going to do that to my truck as well, I was going to use the Bosch secondary coolant pump from my 93 Passat (she don't run nomore) and just try that since I have one already! I'm not sure of specs on it but I figured it's free, why not give it a shot. I was going to use copper lines, for my submerged lines but I went to Homo Depot and found them to be VERY expensive. What are you going to use?

I have a 40qt cooler with hand bent 1/2" copper line (it's cheaper for me) running through it in an infinite "S" pattern (think - back of the fridge) but not sure if I'll use that or just submerge a pair of coolers in another ice chest and fill with ice water on race day. I'll have a bypass valve (probably electronically operated with manual override) that will omit the ice chest when not racing and will function with just the CAS cche/fans.

I'm still mentally engineering this project.

let me know what you come up with I'm really interested in doing this, I think running the coolers instead of the copper is a great idea, and probably cheaper, I might give that a shot. How would you run the bypasses? I'm thinking a "y" fitting with two valves on it? How are you going to run your lines to the IC? I really don't want to drill 2 holes in my bed....

If you look in the Ford Motorsports catalog they have the Ic pump from the Ford Lightning.

This is the same pump Magneson uses with there supercharger system this is the pump I will be using.

Yeah, the coolers would work just fine IMO. If they do on the maiden voyage (hopefully next week or so), I'm gonna have a custom cooler made (aluminum box inside of a bigger aluminum box with the gap between the two (3"-4") filled with industrial insulation foam) with a pair of coolers mounted inside.

The bypass would be two electronic "Y" valves that would operate simulateneously (shared voltage input) to include or omit the ice chest circuit.

Re: Pump for rear IC system

was thinking about doing this same thing the other day and this is the pump I was looking at, it may be overkill though :dunno: Kinda $$$ but I bet it would be one of the best if $'s no problem

( bear with me, first time trying the link thing -- in case it doesnt work, look at summit part # ded-wp3)

Re: Pump for rear IC system

Coolers? Probably a tranny cooler (like so), but it'll probably hafta be painted/coated since I'll be using salt in the ice water to lower the freezing point of the water.

I made a rough sketch of what I'm thinking:

*Pump is omitted due to me not knowing the exact style/location of pump.

Re: Pump for rear IC system

A bigger centrifugal pump should work OK, but should be installed at the low point in the system (like our stock pumps are). If that isn't practical, then a positive-displacement pump (like the shurflo you linked in the 1st post) will give better results. A positive-displacement pump will definitely make it easier to 'burp' all the air out of the system. Al from Austin has a setup like this, but dunno what pump he is running. He's not on the board. Steve Nunley might know.

Thanks Rick. Much appreciated.

Next question......with a positive-displacement pump where would be the best place to put the pump? Pre-cooler? Post-cooler? Does it matter?

Re: Pump for rear IC system

FWIW, I used to have a 64 qt. ice chest in the rear of my Typhoon for these purposes, installed by previous owner. Had the stock lower IC in the Igloo & then 3/4" line running along the frame rails under the truck to a mechanical valve in the front; this allowed bypassing the cooler like what you're desiring. Had the ATR aux. behind the grill, stock upper IC, & that was all up front (no other lower CCHE.)

All of the above was circulated by a Shurflow mounting on the DS fenderwell, where ATR used to recommend putting it. Pumped fine. This set-up worked *really* well to lower intake temps, IF you were at the track or were only making 1-2 runs on the street; beyond that, you'd toast the ice in the cooler & then have a bunch of water sloshing around inside the cooler, not to mention the weight assoc. w/ filling a 64 qt. cooler.

I've since removed the Igloo & mechanical valve, & gone w/ a Griffin lower CCHE w/ 2 Spal fans on the back, keeping the ATR aux. behind the grill. I think for all the trouble fabbing, mounting & routing everything, + the weight assoc. w/ a cooler full of ice/water, alcohol injection is a better option. Note to self: I need to get off my arse & get my Razor alky kit installed!!

I understand the ceveats of this system for prolonged use and this will be for track days only. I already have meth injection and can attest to it's benefits, but it has trouble combating the heat soak in multiple on/off throttle situations (like Solo II Autocross). Also, the shifting of the weight to the rear (moving of front cooler/lines to the rear and weight of ice chest and ice) should make the truck more neutral at the limit.

The nice thing about them is, they don't really care. I'd place it for best sound isolation (they tend to be noisy) if you plan to do anything with the truck except autocross. Next consideration IMO is protection from environment (water and road debris). Then, yeah, before the cooler. Might as well pump it when it's already warm.

Re: Pump for rear IC system

Hood, I started to install my icechest set up this week and just wanted to tell you what I came across. I started by rerouting my IC lines throught the pass side fender, my original intention was to have a "Y" valve where it came out of the fender and send the 3rd opening to the back of the truck by running it back into the fender and along the frame rail. Well that didn't work so well. there just isn't enough room, for the valve, for the hoses etc. So I was going to run it between the wheel liner and the cab, same problem. So what I have decided to do is keep the IC reroute on the pass side, but I'm going to run a "T" with vavles right off of the IC, one leg will go to pass side reroute, other side will go drivers side to back of truck to icechest. I am having a hard time finding a "T" with valves though, any good ideas??

Re: Pump for rear IC system

Instead of bags of ice , try a large block or frozen 1 gallon jugs of water . I have a small cooler that fits 3 1-gallon jugs snug so they dont slam around. I thought about this idea before but dont want the extra weight .Have fun racing .
