Keeping with tradition, I got my one kill for the year tonight
. Living out in the sticks and driving my truck less than 3K a year doesn't amount to much action for me. Usually it's either wrong wheel driven, neon glowin', bass thumpin' coffee can exhaust farting imports or twin chrome smoke stacked, diesel powered, "no fear" stickered jacked up 4X4's that want to run me  .
After leaving the cruise in, I drove around for well oven an hour looking for something worth wasting gas on. The air was really cool tonight, the kind or air that makes you aware of another level of power that the truck is capable of when it's running 100%... With my intercooler water temperature reading 55 degrees, I bumped my boost setting on my Ultimate chip from T1 16 psi to T1 18 psi just in case I got to line up with anything worthwhile.
After slamming the door shut on a bunch of folks who thought that they would fly by me and cut me off, I decided to call it a night. I made a "B" line for Taco Hell to grab a bite to eat. Up ahead of me I see two camaros turning into a dark parking lot. The one that got my attention was silver in color, had some decent sized meats out back and a pretty healthy sounding exhaust. As I went by, I could see the outline of several other cars in the parking lot. Obviously a hang out for the folks who prowl the street at night. I just gave a sight as I drove by wishing that I could line up against a car like that before the truck goes into winter hibernation.
I leave Taco Hell and get in the turn lane to head home. The light goes green and what do you know, the silver camaro is in front of the SUV in front of me
! He got on it a bit not knowing that I was behind him. I'm surprised that he didn't goose it when I flew around the SUV to catch up to him. Slowly, I catch up to him and we are cruising side by side on a two lane highway. I could see when I was behind him that there was a passenger up front. I pull slightly ahead of him so that he can see the cowl hood and triple gauges lit up like the 4th of July. The radio gets turned off and the window comes down to better hear the downshift and increasing RPM's signaling that it's on. But to my surprise, it never does. Two traffic lights are ahead. The first one is red but there is a truck in my lane...
The light goes green and we are both off again. He gets on it a bit to put some distance between him and I. I erase it pretty quickly and and ease off the throttle so that I can coast back up beside him without my blow off valve letting the "I've got a turbo" cat out of the bag. Once again we are side by side doing the "driving on eggs cruise" waiting for the other guy to make the move. The car is very sharp, the type that you would expect to see some form of forced induction and/or nitrous under the hood. We round the turn and the second traffic light looms off in the distance. However, we both look at each other all the while doing the posted speed limit. The way that the lights are timed, the second light will be red for us. And with less than 1,000 feet out the moment every syty anticipates, the light changes.
I know that I have plenty of time to get prepared for a display of "street supremacy" once we are stopped. However, I waste no time dropping the transmission into neutral and brake torqueing the engine to lock up the brakes to hold as much boost as possible. That got his attention and I was rewarded with the healthy roar of a V8
! At this point it is a crap shoot since neither one of us has really shown what we have. I wonder who has bit off more than they can chew in this "run what ya brung" contest. As I start to build boost, the hood on my truck starts to point skyward. Hmm, I wonder if the drag radials that I have on all four are going to give me any traction issues on this cold night... Then just as the light is getting ready to go green, A truck pulls up the intersection to turn right :squint: . I was ready to abort but opted to stay in boost and see what the truck was going to do.
The light goes green and we are both sitting there for about a second before we go when we both see that the truck is going to stay put. Instantly I am three lengths out and opening the gap slightly. The real estate between us opens to 4 or 5 lengths and he never pulls on me. Soon as I hit 100 MPH I get off it. At some point after 70 or so, he must have got out of it too because he was a good ways back. I rolled my window down and gave him a big thumbs up for the run. When he caught up to me *just* as I was getting on the on ramp to go home, the passenger returned the thumbs up
.
