thinkin about taking off my cat and muffler

I got the wb 02 sensor in and i want to run sort of like cut offs.I heard that thid can cause overboosting is this true. And will it just make me loose power.

you need an aftermarket wastegate if you want to delete the cat.. plain and simple.

yeah the over boosting issue is definitaly true...i have a gutted cat and it overboosts sometimes...but my wastegate is stock.

CODE 31 will come and get you :rotf:

... ya can run, but ya can't hide ( - i tried and failed w/ stock WG in good condition) !!

HTH,pat.

btw.: also thinkin' on another try running w/o cat plus 38mm ext.WG, but IMO a huge disadvantage is, that when going w/ this setup the ECM can't really see whats going on ... or spend big money for a good boostcontrol (which i don't have :squint: )

My Greddy Profec B Spec II demonstrated rock solid boost control with no Cat or Muffler. This is on the sotck wastegate.

I am using the same controler and the boost is solid but I have a cat and muffler. Thinking of getting rid of the muffler but keeping the cat.

With some dp changes, the stock WG can be made to work fairly decent also as another option.

what changes?

I thought my Saudi Ty didn't need or come with a cat and am about to take mine off as well. It has been building too much back pressure and blew the gasket on my dp-turbo.

I am exempt from having one as per legislation in this country.

Well one of the otheer fellas should be able to stomp on my toes here but I think (key word think) for the most part that you can remove the cat or the muffler but not both on a stock truck unless you are going to do some exhaust mods like external waste gate or if keeping the stock boost control, porting the turbin housing, knock out the puck and mod your DP for that. The Saudi models had a muffler but no cat, also no o2 sensor. You should be ok with pulling the cat (I think).

I'm goning to mod my PTE 67 and see if I can make the stock boost control work. I don't want to go with an external WG or control unless there is no other way.

... how in detail could that be made

- am i right thinking : remove puck and let gasstream directly into the DP (weld on) ?

so, if thats the way - where goes the WGexhaust in stock setup - through the puck ??

TIA,pat.

Re: thinkin about taking off my cat and muffler

If you look at the stock exhaust housing/wastegate flapper and look at how gas must flow when the flapper is open you will notice it must make 2 sharp 90 degree turns.

The last 90 will be into the main exhaust stream. Not good for flow at all.

In the past some people have had larger flappers installed, which help.

What i have discovered is if you know out the puck, and cut out the middle section, you then have a big oval outlet on turbo. Now make a custom flange to match, weld that to your stock dp or move up to 3" and blend in the wastegate section you will be amazed how much better boost control can be.

Well to be honest with stock chip you may actually notice lower boost at first.

For example on a stock truck/dp initial wastegate dutycycles in the chip are around 50%. This means the WG is open about 50% of the time to control boost.

When I go to 3" dp, I have to move the initial WG DC up almost near 100% at low MPH, and drop it to about 80% as MPH goes up (depending on boost level). Small changes in WGDC make much larger changes in boost than before. I have found that upgraded flappers are not needed once the dp is opened up.

Re: thinkin about taking off my cat and muffler

jeff, i'm having a hard time understanding boost control. specifically, the interaction between F70 and F71. can you, or anyone else, explain? what about F23 and F24, how do they factor into the equation?

F70 Desired Boost Pressure VS NTRPMX AND NTPSLD TPS%
F71 Wastegate Duty Cycle -vs- Delta TPS%
F23 Turbo Transport Lag Vs. MAP
F24 Turbo Transport Lag Vs. RPM

i realize this is a BIG question. hope you can type while filling the belly with Turducken :)

I can answer F70 and F71, 23/24 I hopefully dig can chime in.

F70 is the desired boost. Stock it is based on TPS% and RPM. This is the boost the ecm will try to maintain.

F71 is wgdc -vs- tps (stock) or a very common and excellent hack Dig did which changes it to be based on MPH instead of tps. This is where does the WGDC need to be at each (TPS or MPH) to get to the desired boost.

If the DC is too high, it will overshoot the desired boost, ecm will reduce DC, boost drop down to correct level.

If DC is too low, boost won't reach desired, ecm will start to close the WG and boost will raise.

This is the main table to adjust for good boost control. When you use the mph hack, it will allow you to smooth out spikes, based on rpm/engine load, etc more than the stock.

There are some constants that play a big part and can be very helpful, but F70/F71 are the two main ones I would start with first.

Re: thinkin about taking off my cat and muffler

I add to this turbo tuning section here, I changed my desired boost back to TPS from the MPH hack and noticed alot of spikes and seemingly lack of control. I played with the settings some, but didnt like it so I went back to the MPH scale. It definately helped smooth my boost. I didnt think the MPH hack was helping me, but with a short comparison I was wrong.
