possibly a dumb head question !

I tryed to search but no luck

Are vortec heads from say a 99 and newer s10 better then my stock ones i can pic them up at a decent price 100 buck complet rebuilds are they direct fit bolt ons and whats the power advantages ?

They are not direct bolt on, you will need to modify your lower intake manifold and drill tap the heads to match your intake bolt patern.

Stock Unported about 50 hp, bigger valves ported 100+ hp.

is their a place that has step by step pics and how to on this seems like its worth it and to port them port them like take a dremel and shave off intake side ?

For porting, mainly what you need to do is match the intake to the new heads by opening the ports on the lower.
For the heads, in my reading I've seen that unless you want to do a lot of porting work, the best bang for the buck on vortecs is relieving the exhaust valve bowl.

As for the mods... Race Proven Motors or Waller can hook you up with a modified intake (I think turbotime still does it too). It's a matter of adding about 1/4" to the top of the runners so that they can be opened to match the vortec ports
