just a quick poll to see what you guys prefer.

If you could have an authentic looking, accurate and detailed Johnny Lightning Typhoon...
Would you want the Luggage rack ON or OFF?

UPDATE 1 - I forgot about the hood... do you still want to be able to open it?
UPDATE 2 - First cast of future TY JL body. This was just a test, not final design.

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...

I just want a JL Ty... I have all of these damn JL Syclones plus a couple of the Lindburgh 1/20 models, and I promised myself years ago to never buy another standard cab pickup! Someone make any mini-Ty dammit!

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...

I would want 'roof rack delete' even tho' I have a rack on the actual truck.

Hopefully, you can do better than I did. This took so long, I started getting impatient at the end and didn't fill gaps like they should've been. But it's fun for my 7yr old to have a model of dad's truck to play with.

Yes, in the picture yours looks pretty good so I am not sure what it realy looks like but this should be a great solution to those that want JL Ty's..

I am sure everyone will be very happy with what I come up with. Give me a little time, I hope to have a prototype for NATS X

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 1

Ok... I added an update because I forgot to mention the hood. No poll on this, just post your preference. Do we really need it to open? It'll be easier if it doesn't but I can makeit happen if necessary.

Since early stages of the poll seem to indicate no roof rack, I went ahead and got started on the project before work today. In the later stages I can still add it if the poll changes. Here is where it sits now...

I selected the black SY as a starting point simply because of the rubber wheels.

Next was disassembly and paint stripping.

I'll UPDATE again later when the poll has a chance to show accurate numbers but it looks pretty clear to me what the final design will be.

...and YES, these will be available to everyone here in some form or another.

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 1

I managed to get more done than I thought last night.
Here's the beginning of a very long and tedious process.
As you can see it still needs a lot of work. More to come....

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 1

not to be a stickler...but the only thing that will be odd about doing it this way is the ty won't be proportional. still looks like a neat little project, just wish there was an easy way for it to be the correct length since the bed it longer on the sy.

I'd love a JL Ty with or without the rack, I'd sit it by my JL GN!!!

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 1

Lookin' good. (believe me, I know how long this could take)

Are you doing anything with the tailpipe? (I didn't)

FWIW, I used a diecast metal shell from some old Matchbox truck and epoxied it on. I also took the rear seats from the matchbox and shaved them down so they would fit in the bed of the donor Sy, so my Ty has front and back seats. I also kept the hood functional and painted the engine to better depict actual colors.

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 1

Renz.. yes I know but I have no choice at this point. Maybe in the future I will create something more to scale.

Baythan.. Kewl.. you have back seats. You did a great job on yur TY and maybe someday i will get to see it. I think there is a misunderstanding here. I am not making a JL TY for myself, well ok I am but what I am really doing here is making a complete TY body that will substitute in place of the SY body on the JL's. (this is why I cannot change the length Renz) If all goes well, I will be able to offer a TY body to everyone here and all they will have to do is take apart one of their SY's and put this on. It will probably take 2-3 castings before I get it right because of the windows but I hope it doesn't take too long.

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 1

I think the Ty looks "naked" without the roof rack. Just looks like something is missing. But then I guess that's why so many perverts own Ty's.

Aaahhh! Okay. I get it now. Brilliant! Great idea.

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 2

Made some more progress. I wasn't going to post this stage because it was ony a test to check the detail of the front end and cladding. Everything looks up to par so I can finish the back section now.

You can see that it's not flush with the bed of the truck anymore. this is because I am trying a new method of putting the side windows in. The rear window in finished and correct but I had it a little crooked in this sample.

Anyway, here are the pics of the test cast.
The next one will be much closer to the final deal.

It fits the SY bottom perfectly

As a matter of fact... my son has already claimed it.
He's been driving it everywhere, I think it's stuck to his hand.

Nice! Regardless of which one you make, I'll take 1 of them

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 2

Just a quick update on the latest progress...
I figured a few of you guys would want something like this.
It's not exactly how I imagined it, but will have to do for now.

ENJOY! Yes it's a working cowl hood

(will fit any JL SY)

Re: Johnny Lightning Typhoon...UPDATE 2

looks good. I have an actual s-10 blazer die-cast body. I don't know who made it and Ive never seen another. Would make a perfect swap if one could figure out how to do the cladding.

Also, Matchbox was supposed to do a typhoon a few years back. The project must have fell apart because they spent a lot of time and film on my typhoon.
