ice in the ontercooler idea.

So i was bored at work today and i thought about how i can fit ice in my intercooler!! Maby i was tweaking when i thought of this but here it goes... I was thinkin i can take the ic off and grind out the hole where you put the fluid in so that you can fit bigger ice cubes in. And when i race i can just pack it with ice. I live in san diego so the freezing factor is non existant.

The size of the hole now is really small but if i thinn it out i can fit quit a bit of ice in there, and the cap will still fit fine. Has anyone ever thought about this? Im just brainstorming, plus im too poor to get me an a/a set up.

The inside of the intercooler is packed with aluminum fins just like the outside of your radiator, so you wont be able to fit any ice cubes inside, you might be able to try shaved ice but it wont last but a couple of minutes before dissapearing, the ony feasable ice setup is a remote multiple gallon tank and TONS of ice, and even that is usually only for race day.

Yea the best thing to do if you want to use ice. Is put a cooler in the bed with aluminum or cooper tubing in the cooler to run the cooland through.

I though about doing this but i drive my truck on the street to much and just decided to go to a/a and meth injection. Imo if you drive on the street either stick with the stock intercooler and meth or go a/a and meth. On a 98 degree day at the track my intake temps went from 115 in the staging lanes to 62 but the end of a 1/4 run. When i get done with the new motor it will be on it also.

Re: ice in the ontercooler idea.

how about in the return line adding a tank like an aover flow tank, but something just to add volume to the system and a placewhere you can add ice also. it would have to be able to be sealed off so that all the water does not justpour out of it instead of going through the ic. or, how aboutadding that additonal tank and moving the pump up into the engine compartment at the exit of that tank and that way it would not have to be sealed off, or maybe it would but you might get better flow due to the shorter rise the pump would have to push the fluid up.......just a few thoughts

Been done. As others have said, the ice chest method is the most common. Anything you could actually put in there would be gone 20 seconds after you started the engine.

It's a pain in the hump. Water sloshes all over, and you're replacing nearly all the ice every run. Let me clarify that- it'll eat 2 5-lb bags of ice, easy, per run. Not to mention, all that ice and water is heavy.

Another option... a dry ice brick on the ic itself, wrapped in a IC blanket.
This goes pretty fast too.

The effect is fabulous... I've seen 40 degree MATs briefly with the dry ice.
It's just too much of a PITA from a practical standpoint.

Re: ice in the ontercooler idea.

Fill the IC with Liquid Nitrogen, sub zero IC temps too bad the IC shatters due to the fact the aluminum gets brittle due to the sub zero temps

Drive in Canada only in winter and not worry about it.

How about a fuel cool can in line with some dry ice inside?

Something like this:

except with a larger fluid line (3/4")?

wont work the coil would have to be huge because the coolant flows way to fast best thing is a chest of ice with a screen to keep the pieces from entering the system, But these are drag only things for street use get a a2a and be done

Re: ice in the ontercooler idea.

I haven't tried this yet on my Ty, but on my truck it works great. Since the AC evaporator coil is right next to the heater core, I use the heater core as the heat exchanger. In the summer I have to run the AC all the time here anyway, but I set it to heat. This moves the baffles so air blows over the cold evap coil and through the heater core, effectively chilling the water. I see about 10*F below ambient while cruising and 15-20*F below ambient at WOT with no meth.

It works great in staging too as long as you keep the condensate contained. You can just shut off your AC before a run, but make sure you have a big enough reservoir given the flow rate of your pump. :)

I have a dry ice box in the bed of my SY with 2 extra intercooler pumps, braided lines from front to bed, and 4 extra intercoolers with fans. It really does the job.

Do you have any data showing before/after results comparison?

Unfortunately I do not. The SY was built by Rockford Racecraft already when I bought it. It runs like a raped ape. You can really tell a difference that the cool air flow produces.
