need help with tan/black wire for ignition timing

i recently pulled my motor from the phoon and sold it to a customer of mine that wanted it installed in his 85 el camino.i got the motor in and bolted down finished all the bs and then started on the wiring harness.after a day of sorting out what was needed and no needed from my harness i hit the key and it fired right up and ran good however the only wire i cannot terminate is the timing spout wire,i need to know what signal that wire needs...i.e.ground,12 volt,.5 volt........thanks in advance

i think that wire does alot more than just timing on off. if you unplug it it will run without the ECM controlling the timing. but i could be wrong

isn't that the wire that you disconnet to set base timing to zero? once you set timing to zero you reconnect it so the ecm controls the advance/retard?

just from what i've read here. i actually don't have my syty motor in my s10 : )

doesnt it go inside the truck on the drivers side?it is currently hooked up too the pcm but it doesnt terminate on the other side of the harness

Goes from the distributor to the ECM. Interrupt it to set timing. 'Nuff said. But it needs to be there, or no timing, Code 42, and CEL will be illuminated.

OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a BROWN (not 'tan') wire with a blk or wht stripe (Can't remember which color stripe.) that goes to the bulkhead connector, but isn't connected to anything on the inside?

This is for the alternator charging light. It is not used on a SyTy, as the cluster doesn't have a charge-light. The alternator still works, because the pnk/blk IS hooked to 'ign'. If the El Camino has a light, you can hook it to this wire, and it will work. I assume the alternator is working? Otherwise, leave it disconnected.

Is this the wire you mean?

it may be i will check it tomorrow,i didnt have a chance too see if it was charging i just briefly fired it although i do remember connecting the pink/blk wire for the alternator trigger so i assume it is,thanks

It looks like this:

"The ESC Electronic Spark Timing "tan wire with a black stripe" that everyone can't find when attempting to set their timing (s-series). Wire is under the carpet on the passenger side below the heater box. It is disconnected to set the timing, then reconnected."

i know where the wire is,i need to know what signal it needs from the inside of the truck????
