Stripped Typhoon that was on E-bay.

Well guys add me to the owners of that weird no cladding Typhoon.

I made a post on the e-bay section too that i'd bought it.

I need help from someone who can find out more about this truck.

Why did they make it like this?
How many were made like this one?

Would it be worth putting back to stock?

I think the truck is totaly ugly this way but sometimes it's worth putting them back to

stock because they were a weird factory misfit.

Help me find a direction for this poor thing.

Calling it "Project Ugly Duck"

Thanks for any help.
Scott~ VIN 1GDCT18Z8N0810881 1992 Typhoon.

Notice the white truck to the left of the photo. The white truck was the doner truck (cladding and interior) for the red truck (its not a typhoon).

Teddy Niotis own(ed) both trucks. It's nowhere near a proto; the VIN is too high.

Did we ever get a definate answer about how this truck was sold new from a non-bias 3rd party?

Edit: nevermind, I see that the Merk/Jimmy element answered my question as I was typing.

I am curious why the guy who did the 'clone (Teddy?) stripped a Ty to make a 'clone rather than paint the Ty to his liking? No big deal... just curious as to the circumstances.

Oh, and Scott... if the truck has a sound body, sure... why not make it look like you want? Does it have a salvage title?

I guess if it could be absolutely proven it was delivered from the factory sans cladding, etc... you just established the market value for it by virtue of having the winning bid. If there's $$ left in the budget to make it look good (again?), go for it.

I just got off the phone with Teddy Niotis...
He said that the truck was produced exactly the way it looks. (no cladding/chrome/4x4 rims)
The truck was about ready to get repo-d (I have the repo paper in the truck) and the owner called a local guy to see if he wanted to strip it out before it got repo'd. That's when it lost all it's guts.
From there it got passed around several times with intentions of being a V8 project ect. which never went anywhere.

The cladding on the red truck came from a different Ty. Not this one.

I asked why GM made this and how many. He was told they were to be "sleepers" or GM exuitve trucks and there were 5 made. There is a # 2 on the core support still !!! Werid!
There's also a engine desingation badge/ emmissions sticker that has Syclone 4.3L and all the vaccume hose routeing on that sticker.

So.. Teddy is checking into more of the history and seeing if he can contact the guy's who might still have some of the parts from the truck.

I did not know anyone else had "ugly duck" as their project.. Sorry!!!! That phraze just kinda fit this truck.

It has a clean Michigan Title......
The body has rust.. but it's nothing that replacing panels can't fix. They are pleny avalible and they are not expencive.
Thanks for the help,
Scott~

I've got good pictures of the PAS sticker with the VIN and the under hood stickers.
Can anyone post them for me?
Thanks, Scott~

EDIT: Whatever it is, it shows signs of having been turbocharged at one time or another. The blanket on the steering boot is a dead givaway IMO. :2cents:

Thanks a ton!!!!!!

I looked at my wifes "Real" Typhoon last night and the core support sticker was identical. So was the PAS sticker on the door jam. The emmissions sticker was too. The bracket for the stock Typhoon air box is the same as the one I removed from her truck..
So... It is a real Typhoon that was made with no cladding, ugly wheels and Typhoon interior/power train...
The real question is why?
The date says 12/09/91 was it a test truck? or was it made before the cladding was avalible?
Maby they wanted to do testing and fitment of inteior/ stress tests ect?

My question is how do you know it never had cladding? As far as I know, the public knowledge of this truck is that it showed up at an used car dealership in 2000 without cladding and with 4x4 wheels. The ebay guy 'incomplete' explanation was total B.S. every SYTy comeback as incomplete.

I would try Contacting Brian (Merk) or Marty (SyborgTT) to see if they have any info on your truck, they may have not gotten through all the prototype's, so be patient and it may take a while. The file have been a work in progress ever since I remember when I bought my truck 5 years ago...

If they don't have any info right now I would try to document if it never had cladding. Cladding had dozen of rivet holes, that would have been filled. Try contact owner prior to 2000 perhaps try to find the original owner.

Your truck isn't an early prototype. It was made 1/3 of the way through production. 92 Typhoon started being made Sept of 1991 (most new car are like that and introduce in the fall of the previous year) Your truck has a normal VIN and when I looked at the RPO on the auction and they were also normal (ie like every other Typhoon)
A normal regular production 92 Typhoon is like this,

1GDCT18Z*N081****

These are some abnormal VIN's

pas_document.jpg

The RPO codes being typical a Typhoon doesn't mean your truck as special order is a dead end (ie no special order rpo) The RPO code would have been done by GM, but PAS did the final assembly so it still could have been specoal order. I would guess that if did come from PAS without cladding someone influenential probably pulled some strings to have it like that.

Re: Stripped Typhoon that was on E-bay.

Dave...> Thanks for your insite... That's most helpfull!

I've contacted Syborg.. he's looking into it. I contacted him before I bought it.

Being a body/paint guy I don't see any indication that this body ever had any cladding. There is rust on all these panels but they'd never been painted.
That kinda lays the cladding was on the truck theory to rest. The core support has never been off the truck.. nor have the fenders/doors/quarters. it's all factory welds on the quarters.

This truck is not going anywhere soon. Teddy is going to get back with me on the parts that are missing. And I'm going to start gathering drive train parts to put it back to stock.
Once it's back a running unit I'll paint it back factory white and put it to the way it was produced.

It'll be interesting to know the real reason why some day.. I'll be patient.. It's got a LONG way to go before it's much more than a empty shell anyway. I've taken on harder projects that got completed!

Thanks again, Scott~

Good luck with your search effort. The good new is if can document the truck as a cladding bare truck, it should be a lot easier to restore back to original.

Re: Stripped Typhoon that was on E-bay.

Thanks for the tip!!!!!!

That'd be one huge step! I'd build that engine up for my wife's Typhoon and take her good running stock one out and put in into the Naked Typhoon.
I looked up his e-mail address and sent him a message to see if it's still for sale.
Sounds like the cladding is still good on his. All I'd realy want is the drive train.

Thanks... This has been a huge help!!!!!

Re: Stripped Typhoon that was on E-bay.

Another Memeber and I have been talking about this truck and he had a thought that maby this truck was made with out the Typhoon stickers...?
Anyone can throw on stickers as we said right from the begining.
What if this never had stickers and was totaly plain jane.. Now.. That would be cool. The actual Typhoons look awsome with the decals.. but this one looks like A$$ with them on there.
It'd be like the GNX not having any badges but the GNX on the grille and the trunk.
Any thoughts?
I am going to contact the Michigan Motor Vehicles departmnet and see If I can find out who the actual owners were and try contacting them.
Who knows someone who worked at PAS? or GM division in charge of the project?
I'll be at the Nationals with my wife's Typhoon... Maby someone there can help?
I'll bring all pictures and information that I've gathered when I come.
Thanks again,
Scott~
