20G Turbo

Re: 20G Turbo

you'll be fine. you'll probably gain 10hp at peak but lose a ton of lowend power. you'll have to wait for the 20g to spool versus the instant spool of a stocker. a bigger DP will help but it will still lag. i'd do a 20g(or larger) conversion of the stock turbo. you wont have to sacrifice spool time for power. also, the TurboTweak VeloSyTy chip is a great improvement over stock since it is adjustable.

Re: 20G Turbo

What you would really want to do in in a 20g situation is upgrade the converter. The chip will do next to nothing without a higher stall. You can have a great performing truck with a 20g with minimal mods elsewhere. IMO, that is the turbo SYTY's should have come with in the first place.

X2 - the convertor is the key. I'm still fighting issues not getting more than 10#'s and the boost hits fast and pulls harder than my stocker @ 15#...and spools very nice. I using the stock DP and also have a 9/11 (part 9" part 11") convertor that stalls around 3K RPM...and built trans.

Re: 20G Turbo

The 20g is a great turbo for a mostly stock truck. Many years ago I ran 7.67 1/8 mile which should have been very close to high 11's quarter mile ET with a 20g and 2800 9/11 TC with around 18psi. If you can, look for a 10cm2 or a 12cm2 exhaust housing. The 14cm2 is definitely tougher to spool. I ran the 10cm2 and it felt perfect with the 2800 9/11.

You can also throw in a set of Ford 36# blue top fuel injectors which act very similar to the stockers in terms of their output flow curve to give you a little more fuel.

So its 10,12, and 14cm exhaust housings on the 20g? I wonder what size is on my Blue Ty? Is the housing marked with the housing size?

Re: 20G Turbo

yeah they are marked. but the only place i could find my marking is on the inside of the turbine inlet. so you would have to remove the turbo to know.

I have the 14cm. You will want a higher stall with it for sure. I think it was a nice upgrade, and it retains a stock appearance, which is what I was wanting.

Re: 20G Turbo

From personal experience running a TD06 20G with a 14cm exhaust on a standard stall is not a good idea.
You will no longer be able to launch the truck as I was unable to build more than 4-5psi off the line.
Once moving you may notice some small gains (which can be maximised once tuned to suit) but in my opinion nothing to get to excited about.

I didn't believe I would need a higher stall TC and bolted the 20G on (even though it has been discussed here many times). I was very close to replacing with stock turbo until I finally installed a different Torque Convetor and started to change the tune to suit.

This is just my own experience regarding this. I'm now slowly starting to see the gains but would not recomend this as a bolt on upgarde without supporting mods.

Re: 20G Turbo

I wouldn't swap one on a stock truck unless you planned on upgrading the stall at the same time because if not the trucks going to extremely slower.

Re: 20G Turbo

Comp Turbo reworked mine, instant spool on stock truck. 20 g and turbine clipped.:D

Clipping the turbine wheel does not make it spool faster, in fact it makes it require an even higher stall converter.

Guys , read up on what clipping a turbine wheel does for you. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=clipping+a+turbine+wheel

They probably installed a smaller A/R turbine housing. & clipped your wheel.
What does your torque converter stall to?

Re: 20G Turbo

I would buy one of these if I was looking for a 20G turbo. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290544702486&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

The 12 CM housing would be better than a 14 Cm w/a stock torque converter.

Plus you can pick how stiff an actuator you want.:2cents:

What about with a B&M Holeshot 2400?

Www.turbochargers.com will upgrade your stock turbo to a 20g

Do you know what kind of cost this would be?

What did they charge you?

Re: 20G Turbo

Well I am probably not going to call them right now, as I do not know exactly what I would be wanting done to the turbo in the first place. I was just trying to see if having my stock turbo redone would be a better option than buying a new or used 20g. Thanks.
