92 Ty #1852

Realized I hadn't started one of these yet so I figured I should get it going. I have a build thread for my Jeep on my Jeep site and love looking back at it and having everything documented.

Anyways, I bought #1852 off eBay in December of 2015 out of Salt Lake and had it shipped over to Denver. It wasn't quite in the condition I had hoped it was in based on the eBay listing, but I'm still satisfied with the purchase. Here she is the day she got to Denver:

The ad had said it was "all original" and that's close to being accurate. Didn't care for the polished wheels, some of the cladding is lightly damaged, the interior is pretty well worn, and the hood is IMO not the original hood. Also some issues with the paint. Appeared to me that the truck sat outside most of its life and wasn't properly cared for. But it was still what I wanted, something I could buy cheaper, put the work in myself, and end up with a nicer truck.

The truck was pretty dirty when she showed up, so I pulled it into the shop and spent the better part of a weekend washing and detailing the Ty.

I still have some concerns about the quality of the paint job that's on there, but for a 25 year old truck I'm okay with it for now.

Then it was time to get to work on the rest of the truck.

First step was the stereo, the cones on the speakers in the dash had actually partially disintegrated and the HU was an old Eclipse unit that barely worked. Total 90's throwback. I pulled that out in favor of a Pioneer flip out screen that was almost identical to the one in my F250 (except the F250 is a true double DIN so the screen is all in the dash and doesn't flip out). I like the unit, but torn on looks so far. Swapped out the 4x6's in the dash and 6x9's in the b-pillar for some Pioneer speakers as well.

From there the next item on the list was the shocks. The shocks that were on there were doing absolutely nothing at all. Got some Bilsteins and it made a world of difference.

The tires were still completely suspect though. They were undersized, old, and crappy tires to begin with. One tire was dry rotted to the point it wouldn't hold air for more than a couple days, another had a plug in the sidewall, bad stuff. So I got a hold of some stock wheels from fivetodrive and put some BFG G-Force Sport Comp 2's in the stock 245/50R16 size on the truck and it looks much better now. Also drove considerably better have some real rubber under the truck.

Having had the truck for a few months now at this point and having put a few hundred miles on it, I was able to start compiling a list of what needed to be done on the rest of the truck, and have started working on that. My original #1 concern was that it leaked oil like the Exxon Valdez, so I began to acquire parts to clean that up, but one night driving home under WOT I heard a little pop and lost boost, still not 100% what caused that.

The truck hasn't moved under it's own power since Thanksgiving or so, but here's the list of what's currently being done:

SportMachines Block Oil Filter Conversion
SportMachines Tune-Up Kit
SportMachines Silicone Vacuum Line Kit
RPM Cold Air Intake
RPM Turbo Drain Hose
New Vacuum Ball (old one was oddly mangled and the nipple to connect the vac lines looked broken)

I also pulled the inner fenders on both sides for all of the work I've been doing, made it TONS easier to get to everything. I'm going to put them back, but like many of you have already done I won't be re-using all of the fasteners. Although zipping them out with air tools really doesn't take that long.

Quite a few things have been done on this truck that seem to have been done by someone with questionable mechanical ability so I'm hoping to slowly make my way through all of those and make this a solid running, mostly stock truck.

I also have to give props to the guys over at SportMachines. Great products, great communication, fast shipping, top notch. I've dealt with a lot of niche vendors over the years and they are a great example of how a vendor should operate in such a niche market.

Nice to see a new build thread on the forums! Good start with the truck and thanks for the kind words. We do our best. Keep up the work and the pics.

We've got quite a fleet around the house, and luckily my wife somewhat shares an interest in wrenching on cars and all that goes along with that. I posted this in another thread, but here she is under the Ty helping me with the turbo drain hose. Her smaller hands come in handy a LOT.

Pretty sure a couple of you are on Garage Journal as well, but here's the link to the build out of my shop over the last couple of years over there: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=254538 Definitely makes wrenching on vehicles a lot easier having a detached workspace, and not having to clean up all the time to get the daily's back inside.

With other toys the Ty gets attention when we have time in between other projects. We have a 95 Jeep ZJ that's highly modded on 35's (long arms, Ford 8.8 rear axle, lots of other stuff), a 2015 JK Unlimited Rubi that is stock for now, and a slightly modded 2001 F250 7.3 tow rig in addition to a 24' gooseneck and a small popup camper based on an Army M416 trailer.

We got most of the truck buttoned back up this afternoon and things are . . . . better? LOL It's building boost and everything just fine, but there's a stumble at idle and light throttle. Under heavier throttle it seems fine, thinking it's fuel related. On a thread on the FB site a while back a couple guys thought I may an issue with my FPR or injectors as my oil smelled like gas, so fuel is where I'm leaning. RPM's don't seem to stay steady either. Also, the turbo lets out a nasty noise when you let off or it shifts at WOT, thinking I might need to send it to SportMachines for a rebuild. I should just re-route my direct deposit right to those guys!

Still a small oil leak too, but not nearly as bad as before. It's from the driver side rear, so thinking I may not have the filter on tight enough or possibly just residual oil from before.

I had taken the hood off for easier access and more light while working on everything and when I took it out on a test drive I hadn't even made it out of my neighborhood before coming across a VW Golf with it's hood off doing some testing as well, found that funny that the first time in 20 years of driving I drive without a hood and within 1/4 mile I see another car with no hood.

Felt really good to get her back out on the road though, even if there are a few more problems that I need to tackle still. Nowhere near ready for cruising or shows yet, but at least I don't have to push it in and out of the shop to work on something else now.

Figured out my rough idle. I had been reading through some of the archives and read somewhere that a guy had dropped a plug before installing it and it cracked but looked fine. I remembered dropping one, just couldn't remember which one it was, so I grabbed 6 UR5's since that was all I could get locally and pulled the UR6's out. Sure enough, I dropped #3 but don't think I cracked it, just knocked the gap to 0. New plugs are in and she's running great.

Hard to describe, but my wife said it sounds like it's giving us a raspberry. I'm going to try to get video here soon.

Sounds normal to me except the whining sound. Most people would get rid of that with a BOV. Not a necessity but many do it anyway. That's the pressurized air getting blocked at the throttle body and moving back through the turbo.

Interesting, the turbo on powerstroke only makes that noise every once in a while and it's only when I go from full throttle with a heavy load to no throttle really fast. The Ty does it just about every time I let off the throttle at anything more than about 1/3 throttle. I think the whine is from a bent blade on the turbo wheel too. At some point the turbo ate a couple small pieces of the factory intake tube.

So I have a couple theories on why it starts to cut out a bit under WOT at higher RPMs. Could be knock retard or not getting enough fuel.

I guess to really figure that out I need to log some data. What's the go to program for that these days? Looks like datamaster is no longer available, but I have plenty of old laptops I can use for this.

Also thinking at some point down the road I'll have the turbo rebuilt by SportMachines and have them throw a BatMoWheel in there too.

Looking to keep the truck mostly stock, but still want to tinker with it a bit.

Another odd thing, my temp gauge. It pegs hot within a couple minutes of driving and then eases back down. The engine does not appear anywhere even close to being hot enough to do that. My guess is a bad temp sending unit or something in the wiring. Is this a common problem?

Having the exact same temp gauge issue. After 2 minutes of driving, it shows I'm overheating. Then after another 5 minutes, it adjusts down to normal operating temp. I bet it's the gauge cluster because I just replaced my sensor on the block and it still does the same thing.

Good to know. I need to pull the gauges at some point anyways as the oil pressure gauge wrapped around and doesn't work anymore.

Got my tags renewed today and got an old laptop working. Ordered the OBD1-USB cable and got DataMaster loaded on the old laptop that can hopefully hold together long enough to get some logging in. Might download TunerPro as well, but for now I really just want to see how much KR I'm getting at WOT in higher RPMs.

Bit of an update, sold the Ty on Bring a Trailer last month. New owner is a wrench by trade so I'm hoping he'll be able to put the work into it that it deserves.

Hey Dave, new owner of #1852 here, just registered on this forum and posted in the new members area! Haven't torn into it yet, but after I get paid for one of my Delicas this week, I'm ordering a round of parts and getting started! Thanks again for making the purchase so easy! Cheers!

Alright, finally time for some updates! I decided I'd just continue the previous owner's thread rather than start a new one, as I'm kind of picking up where he left off.

Brief introduction: I am 25 years old, and work as a tech at a very small auto brokerage / repair shop in Erie, Colorado that specializes in older BMWs, Porsches, and JDM import vehicles such as Mitsubishi Delica vans. I bought this Typhoon because I have wanted one as long as I can remember, and the price was right on this one. It seems like they are either totally clapped out and somewhat cheap, or super nice low-mileage examples that were out of my budget. This one was somewhat between. I knew it needed work when I bought it, but I'm no stranger to a big project - I was part of a team of younger guys that put an engine from a 2015 BMW M3 into a 1988 BMW M3 and completely restored the 1988 M3 for SEMA 2018, that ended up doing quite well in the Battle of the Builders competition.

Also have been working on this M3 for quite some time for the auto brokerage as a project for a customer:

So my experience is mostly with older German stuff, and I really don't have any with older GM stuff. It's kind of like learning a new language when you go from older BMWs to older GM stuff, just as far as how things are put together / taken apart.

So it begins, 12/27/19 I picked up the Ty a few days after winning the auction on Bring a Trailer. It was about 45 minutes from me, and I probably could have driven it back fine, but it was about to snow and the Ty has some somewhat aggressive summer tires on it and I didn't want to chance it.

Black GMC towing a black GMC! The van is somewhat of a unicorn, 8.1 Liter V8 / 3500 conversion van. Tows pretty well for what it is if you can keep the gas tank full.
