abs help

I have an abs light on  and it says to check the grounds. I know about the one on the back of the driversside head. Does anyone know where the others are? I am NOT deleting the abs, if at all possible.

Re: abs help

Well it is a pos to begin with but if you must keep it and want to add grounds then i would change the ground wire to the head completely, and make sure where it contacts is perfectly clean.

You can run one to the sheet metal but once again it has to have a great contact patch or it will not work. Hope this helps

Re: abs help

91 and 92 ABS have an independent ground wire that is grounded at the battery. 93 is grounded to the Engine harness, which terminates at the LF corner of the intake manifold. There is a 5-pin inline connector over the brake booster. The big black wire in it is the ABS ground wire.

If you have a 91 or 92, the most common cause of the ABS light being on is a rear wheel sensor has gone bad. Check the codes in the ABS.You looking for 31 or 35. The sensor can be checked with an ohm-meter at the connector over the center of the rear axle. 1.0-2.0 ohms.

I agree with you: I like the ABS. Especially the 91 & 92 4-sensor system. The 93 3-sensor system, not-so-much.

Edit: OK, I looked in your profile, and see you have a 93. 93s don't have rear wheel sensors. Pull the codes. Post what they are. Also, will the codes clear??? If no, there is a hard-fault. If yes, clear them, and see if they come back. Particularly if there are multiple codes.

LMK if you need more,
Dave

Re: abs help

Are there any VW or other brands with 4 sensors? I drove my Gold the other day on ice and it was awesome and doesnt fail.

Someone could make a braket and we could have reliable good ABS in the trucks. I hear all the horror stories of ABS failure - it sounds miraculous no-one has been killed by the system. I may of course have gotten the wrong story.

Re: abs help

Thanks for the responses. I'll be going to check those spots. The only codes I get are for grounds, no wheel sensor codes. When I clear them they come back, immediately.

Re: abs help

I unplugged both connectors and checked the large black wire and the small black wire with a white stripe. They both tested good. Are there any others to check? I also checked the one on the manifold, it also checked good.

Which ones are they?

I'm looking under 61, 62, 63 and I see this: "Because the BPMV gets its ground through the brake lines, if 61,62,63 occur together, check for a good brake-pipe-to-frame ground".

Might want to try a temporary ground wire from the case of the BPMV to a good known ground.

Re: abs help

O.K. just repulled the codes. 43,44,54,65,66,86 and a new one 27. Now both front wheel senesors are new, so want to test the front left harness. My book says in the 8 way connector L.F. is b yel and f dk grn. Does that sound right?

I am pulling these with a jumper wire, so I think the antilock warning lamp is O.K., or am I wrong?

Background on the truck. When I first got it, the grounds on the back of the head were disconected. When I connected them, I got codes for both front sensors. I replaced both of them and it was happy for a few months.

Response DaveP: My book says yel and lt blu. Just look in the harness at the sensor connector. 86 can be set by riding the brake pedal, or brake light switch adjustment. Be sure pur wire (pin C) has 12V with brake not applied.

No, you're doing it correctly.

It's intermittants, then. Or a control valve (41-54) is stuck, which will not allow codes to clear. Try a few things: Run the motor by pulling the connector for it, and applying 12V directly to the terminals TO the motor. Be sure it runs. With it running, MASH on the brake pedal a bunch of times. In frustration, I even smacked the BPMV with a hammer a few times, with the motor running, and it fixed itself! Be sure the bleeder by-pass valves (on the sides, brass 10MM hex) are closed.

There's some ideas. They came from my experience with my Blazer, which has AWD, and a SyTy BPMV. It was fine for 8 years, and after I let it sit for about 12 months with little use, it was doing the same thing yours is: Lots of codes, which wouldn't clear, and all it did was sit. This is the one I hit with a hammer, and it's been fine for about a year, now.

Re: abs help

Is there a seperate brain box for the abs? I have checked all the grounds and am thinking it might be time to replace the box.

you ever figure this out? mine has been doing the same thing. Telling its a ground issue but I cant find where. Replaced the ABS controller and sensors just to be safe and still having a short somewhere.

curious if you happen to solve it.

thanks
