Accufab AFPR leak...

Smelled raw fuel at start up. Check around and see the area near the SPECIAL Torx screws, on the forward half of Accufab is wet. Sure enough...fuel leak. Thought it could be disassembled...WRONG! The pins in the SPECIAL Torx screws have pins preventing the Torx insert/tool from entering the screw. friggin' POS...nice lookin' paperweight though.

Reinstall old ATR AFPR...no more leaks. SO.........

Who repairs these anyhow? Suggestions? Experiences etc....greatly appreciated! TIA

Tamper resistant torx are fun, I just got a set of security bits so that I could take my mom's 20 year old microwave oven apart  . Got them from Groit's garage: http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?L1=L1_2000&L2=L2_2050&SKU=49147
Thought that I was prepared for anything until I noticed the other day that my Leatherman wave has a 5 pointed torx style screw instead of a 6 point one :-? .

Anywho, sounds like you have a ruptured diaphram in your AFPR. Even if you could take it apart, dunno if you would be able to rebuilt it. I have a CAS AFPR on my truck and it has performed flawlessly for almost two years (knocking on wood). Bought it back in the day when Tony wasn't a four letter word...

AFPR

AFPR

Terry & Mike,

Yah those MoFos keep coming up w new Sh*t to keep screwing us up ! Guess I'll have to be buying a new set of sockets too.

On the AFPR, if U R smelling gas, I wouldn't think that a diaphragm leaking internally would give U an external leak that U could smell. I have always had trouble getting the fuel return line @ the bottom lined up straight. YA gotta be real careful to get it in a few threads by hand, because otherwise U can strip out the soft Aluminum threads in the AFPR. U might check to make sure your "O" ring is OK also.

Yeah Mike, I'm thinkin' of getting a somewhat similar set (w/fewer bits) off ebay. I also e-mailed Accufab for info.

Lynn, my return-line o-ring's outer diameter was crushed but inner dia. was okay :-? ...hmmm...dunno if fuel sprayed from bottom of reg. to upper half of body? Thinkin' back when I pulled vac line off reg. didn't see any fuel spillin'.

Thanks for da replies guys...

For a reasonable deal on a Torx bit and socket set, look for an 'ATD Tools' brand set at your local auto parts store.

Kit #atd-125 gets you a 35 pc. set that includes 13 tamperproof bits (T-7 to T-55) all in a nice plastic case. I found a set on sale for about $30. I believe the regular kit price is just $40.

disassemble leakin' Accufab

disassemble leakin' Accufab

Got a 33 piece Security Bit set off eBay for 5 bucks:p (+ $4.00  shipping) today, insert bit in first Torx screw and find it "not even hand tight" loose! WTF?! Try the next 4, all LOOOOOOSE! Visually, internals seem okay...reassemble with Loctite.

Prior to this I had e-mailed Accufab and they replied that I MUST send it back along with $25 PLUS return shipping for them to inspect, disassemble, replace diaphram(if damaged) etc. They WILL NOT send a replacement diaphram to anyone...

I can 100% understand Accufab's attempt to limit their liabilty by not allowing owners to mess with the internals of the fuel pressure regulator. However, it seems that they need to address their own problems in assembly  ...

...reassemble with Loctite.

Terry, did you use the Loctite that came with your propshaft bolts? If so, I hope that you used it sparingly, because Loctite 242 (blue in color) is made for fasteners from 1/4" to 3/4" (6 to 20mm) in diameter. For the smaller stuff #2 to 1/4" in diameter (2.2 to 6mm), Loctite 222 (purple in color) is recommended. If you used a lot, it may require some heat from a soldering iron to remove the screws.

Mike,
I had used a dab of some old blue-in-color  thread lock compound similar to Loctite on each screw. Hopefully it's weak enuff if it has to be disassembled again.

I'm saving the small tube o' 242...propshaft bolts only! :)
