Alternator upgrade?

Re: Alternator upgrade?

All you guys with Powermaster failures, have you tried contacting Powermaster? They will warranty failures. They were even generous enough to cover my failure even after I explained the situation. Great customer service if you ask me.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

FWIW Ive got a PM 140 on my truck and it lasted about 500 miles. It was putting out :rotf: just fine up until the other day I was coming home from work taking the free way and noticed it wasnt charging. After about 10 miles at 70-ish mph the volt gauge slowly came up to where I didnt feel like Id get stranded but it deffinately wasnt charging nearly as good as it did when the alt was new. It was putting out close to 14 volts at idle in gear but now its down to right at 12v at 2500rpm.

Going to see if I can find some contact info for PM and see what they will or wont do to remedy it.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

If they warranty them or not, I have seen enough fail by buyers it isn't worth it to me. You still end up having to pull the stuff off, ship it back, wait, etc.

Kindof like buying lifetime anything at autozone, all it insures is you get to change it for life.

ive swapped out my power pulleys and gone for a larger crank pullley...
solved the low output at idle problem and the engine also runs cooler ;)

Re: Alternator upgrade?

I bought a 180amp Chrome alternator from a fairly local guy and still have his card. it reads...

Garys Chrome Service
Starters & Alternators
Blairsville PA 15717.
(724) 459 5759. (messages returned promptly)

My dad met him at a Carlisle swapmeet and was talking about my truck. with the weldon fuel pump, elec fans, elec waterpump, etc, i need a good alternator. I dont have the receipt anymore, but he sold me one for under $200 shipped i know. I wanna say it was only $140 plus shipping. I even had a failure about 6-8 months later and sent it back to him and he fixed me right up. It is a direct bolt in, makes no noise (unless your sterio doesnt have a noise suppressor  ) and was a unbeatable price. I never have any problem with dim lights or anything even when everything is running in high gear. ive had the fuel pump on high, fans on high, heater fan running, etc and it doesnt even flinch. im also using a standard interstate megatron battery. This was at least a year ago, but i kept his business card. It is worth a try, leave him a message letting him know what you need.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

I took my alt to a alternator shop here in town and the y rebuilt it to eith 140 or 160 amps, bolted right back in like it came out. No problems as of yet, been 6 months now i think, it was also a lot cheaper to have mine rebuilt/upgraded than buy a new one. But its not shiney chrome or anything tho!

Re: Alternator upgrade?

Thanks for the info/links guys but the vendor I got it from is going to warranty it (TurboTime) and send me a new one. If the new one craps out then I'll take it to a local alt/generator shop and see if they can rebuild it.

I ordered a 10463165 for myself the other day and compared it to a 10463424 that we stock. The only difference I could tell by looking at them was some of the numbers on the tags were different. The 10463165 has no core value, either through GM or ADW, so I'm thinking it will be discontinued soon. I think the only thing it ever came on was the '91 Baja trucks, while the 10463424 came on all kinds of things, including full size trucks and vans. Even though the discriptions don't say that the 10463424 is a 100 amp, the alternator itself says 100A on it, the same as the 10463165 that is described as a 100 amp.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

There are very few Powermaster's that don't die an early death. I don't know why but when a customer comes to us and want's one, we try to talk him out of it because we know that 95% of the time it will come back for what ever reason and we also really don't want to install them either due to said problems. If the fella won't go with our recomendation and just has to have one we also put it in writting that as a S.O. part the warranty is beteween him and Powermaster and the we will charge standard labor charges to troubleshoot or R&R the unit at $48.50 per hour. If the unit must be returned he will also pay actual shipping costs...... not us. So if you get the idea that we don't prefere Powermaster, your right. We just saw too many fail and come back.

That being said there are several options based on requirments ranging from a smaller alt. pulley to overdrive just the alt. at low rpm (we like the 2.11 in. pulley, gives a full charge at idle), a larger crank pulley to overdrive everything at low rpm as mentioned by vortecfiero above and then several heavy duty units available for lots of electrical add ons or mobil audio. Here are a few links for suppliers that we use and know there products, some are also on E-bay by other seller names.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

Installed the new alternator and it works fine. Seems to me from what I found while looking up stuff that syclones came with an 85 amp alternator unless they have the RPO K60. Mine does not. All typhoons should have a 100 amp alternator.

I went over this kind of quick Friday as I didn’t have much spare time, but from what I can tell so far

All 1995 Cadillacs have a 140 amp alternator regardless of model or engine (4.6, 4.9, or LT1). There is an RPO (KG9) even though they all had it. Additional Delco usages are CS 144 140 amp.

All 1995 cars with a LT1 that I looked up had a 140 amp alternator.

Some 1995 C/K trucks with a 5.0 or 5.7 (not 4.3 or 7.4) came with a 124 amp alternator (10463242). RPO 8A3. Additional Delco usage is 19135904 CS 144 120 amp.

Edit

1991 C/K trucks
10463242 4.3Z (LB4) 124 Amp (8A3)

I’m thinking this is definitely the way to go for anyone that wants a GM alternator. I wish I had noticed this before I bought mine.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

Has anyone tried these guys out? LINK Seems to be a good deal on a NEW alternator :)

Will the CS144 bolt right on to our trucks? Reclocking is not a big deal but I dont want to modify my stock bracket, that just takes the fun out of it ;) .

Jeff, did you R&R your Ty's alt. yet?

Its all ABOOT the SYTY eh
Re: Alternator upgrade?

I just had my stock alternator rebuilt to 140 amps, Not sure what he changed, but it only cost me $120 CDN. Though I havent tested it yet since my truck is not running yet.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

I got mine rebuilt to 160 amps a couple of weeks ago for ~$140. Voltage drops to 10-12v at idle and jumps to 14v at anything over 1000 rpms.

Re: Alternator upgrade?

I just cam across this thread and noticed that some of you have had problems with Power master Alternators. I just installed a cs-144 style 200 amp in my Ty and you must install a 47 ohm resistor inline on the L terminal. Thats the pink with a black strip (IGN) from factory plug to a 47 ohm resistor then to the L pin on the powermaster alt. If this resistor is not installed the regulator will burn out much faster than normal. This info came to me from a friend that works in there tech department. No other wires need be put to the alternator. Hope this helps some of you powermaster people.

I've put 5k miles on it so far without a hiccup. I'll have to add that to mine to make sure it doesn't go nuclear.
