Any Sy/Ty'ers own Supra's? Thinking about getting one...

The Sy is starting to show signs of wear and tear with me driving it back and forth to work every day. The original tranny is starting to slip in overdrive, front diff is seeping, some squeaks and rattles, etc. Nothing too major, but I'm going to get something else for the GF and I to drive soon.

After doing some deep soul searching (he he) and thinking about what to buy for another vehicle, I've decided on a 95 Supra TT 6speed. Supposedly, the motors in these things are just bulletproof and they respond VERY well to bolt-ons. Plus they are damn sweet looking cars to boot. Z06 Vettes are nice, but I don't want to spend that kind of $$ plus I already had a Vette and they are too superfluous.

So...do any Sy/Ty owners own twin-turbo Supras? I will NEVER sell my Syclone, but it's still a truck and I need a car with some power and style to round out the herd. I'm thinking I could find a sweet MKIV Supra with low miles for $20-25K, which is a bargain considering they sold for something like $51K new? I've heard nothing but rave reviews on these cars and I'm wondering if it's just hype or are these cars really that good?

OK, enough rambling...

Mike the graphic artist does or did...
Max from chitown
92 Typhoon from NYC has one as well

Might be forgetting someone, but those are the only people I'm aware of..
If you're curious about the motors yes they are bulletproof for the most part and it's common to see people making insane amount of horsepower on stock internals.. Only real downer is the rear suspension....

I have one. Auto's are faster than sticks incase you didn't know that. We have a few members who are pushing almost 1000hp through the stock unmodified motor. The manual tranny's are just about bulletproof where the auto's can only handle 500 or so. With just a boost controller, bcc, intake, dp, exhaust you will be at bpu and can lay down anywhere from 375-450 and running low 11's easy. These cars are the sickest rides i have ever been in. You will own just about anyone whp comes near you. I've only lost to one car and that was my friend's crx. The funniest part is that on here we are like damn you have 500hp! On the supra boards it's common to speak about who's laying down 1500 at the crank and few at the wheels! Too bad you don't live over here. Every summer there is a massive meet down at the beach. This year there will be two 9sec streetable supra's going at it! These cars are turnkeys even when modified and o yea and there is nothing like poping off the targa in the summer. Damn i wish it wasn't stored for winter :(

Unless something has changed drastically in the last 2 years, most 'BPU' Supra were running low 12's and a few high 11's with a good driver.

A good analogy is SyTy's own the stop light races like a Supra owns the Highway Roll on races. They can lose sometimes, but rarely.

Damn, 450HP with a few bolt-ons sounds really nice :D Yeah, I know they just own the freeway and are top-end monsters. I've seen a few video clips of Supras launching at the track and pulling 11's on stock motors with just bolt-ons...pretty sweet. The girlfriend doesn't understand why I want a Supra now, but I have a feeling she will after we get one, he he. I think the decision has been made.

Oh yeah, one more question: which year Supra TT is the best year? I thought I read somewhere that '95 was the good year...not sure why.

They only real mechanically difference is the 96/97/98 have ODBII computer controls. Their were a few minor cosmetic differences in 97/98 and 96 only came with an auto, but it really doesn't make a differnce other than the age of the vehicle and the earlier ones had higher production numbers.

The Term Dyno Queen comes from the fact they are not the best 1/4 mile ET cars. It seems Every Supra distactor has seen a poor driver run low 13 at 120-130 mph. Many 1000hp+ Supra are running 10's and some even low 11's. So the Dyno Queen comes up because with all that Hp, you might expect a better ET or to put it another way, cars sometime will match the ET of a Supra despite have 200-300 less hp.

well stay away from 97,98's. Their computers are different from the earlier versions. I have not done too much research on it but i hear because of their computers it makes it very hard to tune. I imagine once you go aem it won't matter anyway. What color do you want? Also hard tops handle better if that matters to you at all.

I guess things have changed. My friend pulled an 11.4 at bpu level. Pulled trac fuse, reset ecu, 110 octane, no headlight, 315 dr's out back.

OK, did some reading on MKIV.com and it looks like the hardtops are rare, 96 only comes with auto, and the post-95 Poopras have ODBII. I'm going to look for a nice silver or white 94 or 95 6-speed with less than 60K miles. I know this will take some time to find, but I'm not in a position to buy right now anyway; the good news is only two more payments and the Sy is paid off...woohoo!

I would take a ZR1 with NOS over a BPU Supra any day of the week. But again, there is always someone faster then you.

My buddy here in town has a white 94 targa 6 speed. He's expecting to run high to mid 10's this season. He had the car built and dyno'd 808 on race gas and 618 on pump. (Or around there)

Nice car, fast as hell :)

I can vouch, it's NOT just a DYNO QUEEN.

So I guess a lot of us have "BPU Sy/Ty's" then? He he :D Or is that ackronym reserved just for Poopras?
