its been a few months now that iv had my un-lockable front diff & thought i would post some results for those who are intrested.
to begin with, with my style of driving, which could be considered 'aggressive',my truck was getting about 12 miles to the gallon. its a Waller build with vortecs & a Comp 412,15psi on a 'safe' tune. well, when my front diff took a dump,i got a 4wd diff & threw in a manual lock out cable. i unlock it on long trips, but generally keep it locked around town & whatnot. soo after a few months, and several trip back-forth to my buddys cabin in Maine, about 250 miles round trip(in the mountains),here are some results.
before the mod,i was getting about 240ish miles to a tank..approx. 12-13 miles a gallon. after the mod, diff unlocked it jumper to about 325 consistantly...to about 18.4 mpg. on one trip, where i was reeeeal nice to it,set the cruise at 60,it almost hit 360.(19ish mpg)..these are approximations, but clearly an improvment mpg wise. i know when it comes to our trucks, that isent the most important thing on owners minds..but every little bit helps. plus a bit less w&t on the drivetrain(not including rear tires)
so,still not the best mpg,but an inprovment. i just got new tires, soo it was fun putting the old ones through the paces at my buddys place..massive twin slab smoke shows! good stuff.
also,i never realized how 'heavy' the steering wheel is in awd..
but,for anyone thinking about doing this mod, imo, well worth it. again,i didnt mess with the stock diff,i.e swapping the shaft & plate like Waller did-i replaced the whole unit with a 4wd unit that ran me $140 shipped with 66K on it. and a few hours of busted knuckles & cursing!
like i said,i keep it locked up for the bulk of the time. after long highway runs,i check the t-case for excessive heat, but found no real difference from before. i know its not good for the t-case,and its only been about 3k miles..but wow,is it a blast to drive in 2wd..burnouts,power slides & whatnot..FUN!
i never really seen the subject addressed,so i thought...
