SOLD
Selling my beautiful 1992 Typhoon. The truck has 97k miles and has been well taken care of. The history I’ve uncovered is below. In a nutshell, it had the same owner for the first 85,000 miles who maintained it extremely well. The next couple owners made a few upgrades and minor changes.
Mechanical
The focus on the mechanical upgrades has been reliability and drivability rather than all-out
performance. Here’s a list of the things I can think of. Gilbert propshaft, Shurflo intercooler pump (hotwired), ABS delete, EGR delete, all silicone vacuum hoses and new check valves (common failure point), turbo rebuilt by SportMachines with their billet wheel, cat delete, ported turbo, Forge Billet wastegate, new exhaust with high-flow muffler, VeloSyTy chip, 2-gauge pillar pod with fuel pressure and boost gauges, rebuilt transmission, hd motor mounts, 160* thermostat.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time getting everything dialed in and running like it should. I have rock-solid boost control with zero knock at 15.5 psi. Compression is 148-154 across all cylinders (have each cylinder measurement). It’s quick and has no odd noises or issues. Only mechanical thing is that the AC needs a charge about once a week in the summer (R134A).
Exterior
The most obvious thing about the exterior is that the cladding has been removed. The third owner was going for the “sleeper” look and pulled it off. When he found that all syty vehicles (or anything with cladding) have rust under the cladding, he got discouraged and sold it. The fourth owner fixed it right. He replaced any and all rusted pieces with new metal and had the entire truck painted. The paint is gorgeous with no filler and no orange peel. The only flaws are on the driver’s front fender, which has a couple touch-up spots, two fish-eyes and one ding. The rest of the panels are straight and look beautiful. The stock wheels could use refinishing at some point, but don’t look bad. Tires have 50%+ tread remaining.
Interior
The interior is great. The only flaw is a 1.5” cut in the driver’s seat. Carpets, original floor mats, door panels, etc. are in great shape. Everything is clean and works.
History
Have records of first owner’s maintenance over the initial 85k miles. It saw regular flushes of all fluids (trans, differential, brake, oil, coolant) and appears to be well-loved. In 2010, it was sold (no information from that owner – he put less than 1000 miles on it). The next sale was in 2012 to the guy that pulled the cladding off. He’s also the one that had the transmission rebuilt and big plans for a super-sleeper. He put between 1000-2000 miles on it, then sold it to the fourth owner in mid-2013. That guy (who I bought it from) put 8,000 miles on it. He had the body work done and did the majority of the reliability upgrades. I bought it in June of this year and have put about 1,000 miles on it. I did the wastegate, gauges, and turbo port. I planned to keep it, but have since bought a second Typhoon with a serious drivetrain that has a long list of needs. I have to sell this one to finance the build.
Conclusion
This is a no-excuses truck that runs, drives and performs better than it did when new. It comes with some spare tune-up parts and the stock parts I pulled off. If I get my asking price, I’ll also throw in a used Alky Control kit I had intentions of adding and a set of flow-matched 50lb. injectors. Also, for my asking price I’ll give the buyer the choice of wheels. The stockers are on it. But I also have a set of Corvette wheels with winter tires that have less than 1000 miles. The winter tires are really only useful in snow, so I set them aside. They are pictured below.
