blown motor?

For the last several months my truck has had a gas smell in the cab, smoke under the hood coming from the valve cover, smoke puffs from the oilf fill cap,and oil in the pcv valve system. Ive heard it knock a handful of times and immediatly let off, but ive heard that its probally blown already if i could hear it. Ive used datamaster to help do every tune up possible and it runs alright but is missing its full punch while under boost. I guess the next step is to get a compression test to know for sure. Any thoughts?

Re: blown motor?

do that test first, but still could be a rod,I would bet a rod,how many times did you do wide open runs with crappy gas and no datamaster?

Re: blown motor?

Smoke is most likely rings. If it's coming out the oil fill hole, its not a good sign.

idk ,many runs, because i thought nothing was wrong, i think i got datamaster when it was already too late, and i always put in at least 93 octane, i think it was the catback exhaust and stock wg combo that made it overboost too much over time

yea thats what i was thinking

Re: blown motor?

If it's puffing smoke out the valve covers take it out... I would say it needs pistons and or rings. Time for a rebuild...

Re: blown motor?

Would it be cheaper for a rebuild or a used stock motor swap?
It would definitely be cheaper for stock motor swap but who knows what you're getting? If you rebuild it you will know exactly what you have but it will cost between 2500-3500 for a good rebuild if you're paying a shop to do it. (Pistons, rods, lifters, freshen heads, gaskets, rings, bearings, machine work etc)

I just had a rebuild done on mine last November and it ran me 3 large, but it was worth it...do it right the first time, I say...

Re: blown motor?

You could just pick up a 4.3 NA motor and put a turbo on it. The compression would be higher on the motor so you wouldn't be able to run as much boost but that would be the cheap way out

I spent closer to 4k for my rebuild but I went .030 over, eagle rods, SRP pistons, 412 cam etc... I would reccomend a good stock rebuild so you don't have to deal with tuning. That part can become a headache. I wish I left mine stock when it broke a rod at 107k miles

I stuck to stock with mine...has more than enough power for me in stock configuration. Besides, IF I ever let the wife drive it, she doesn't need the temptation to indulge her heavy foot any more than she can with it!!:rotf:

Re: blown motor?

My truck had the exact same problems that you are describing man. I did a compression test and found very low compression in #3 and #4 due to broken ringlands in the pistons. I also had a bent rod in #5. Mine smoked out of the oil filler cap and PCV system and was down on power. I'm in the middle of getting the motor back together now but this time it has alot stronger parts.

Re: blown motor?

Wouldnt bad rings have ruined my block? I guess I want to rebuild my block to stock maybe with new heads and cam

Re: blown motor?

Yes, depending on which ones and how badly broken they are they can score up the cylinder walls badly. I was lucky enough to where mine still have the cross hatching from the factory hone.

I guess it may be a huge waste or time and money if it was

Re: blown motor?

More then likely you won't know the extent of the damage untill you pull it apart.

Re: blown motor?

The cylinders on my motor cleaned up at .030 when my ring lands broke. The first thing you should do is a compression test. If the numbers come back low, I wouldn't drive the truck much because it only compounds the damage if you do. If this has just started happening in the last couple hundred miles your block might be ok. BTW... blocks for these motors are cheap anyway. Take a look at one of my posts...http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=72992&highlight=pulled+motor I took pictures of my cylinder damage here.

Re: blown motor?

You're in my same boat... Thats what my typhoon started to do, its all downhill from there, it started to lose a little power, than the oil pressure would drop every couple months or so and id have to fill with a quart or two... no oil leak... then there was a whiteish goop on my oil filler cap on the inside, and now the oil filler cap seems to have swelled up or something maybe because its hard to pull out and put back in... the smoke came out of the oil filler when opened... from there the power became less and less rapidly, and now i have a typhoon that could lose to a stock honda civic or for that matter maybe a stock ford explorer :squint: my advice...rebuild... now before it gets worse, i dont even want to know the pandoras box that im gunna open up when this truck gets taken apart... do a compression test, and good luck.. ive been saving up for a rebuild for about 1.5 yrs now....
