Blueprinted??

Re: Blueprinted??

It means to precisely machine all the key engine dimensions (piston diameter/cyl bore, ring gap, bearings, cam timing ,etc.) to the exact point within the the manufacturer's spec range that optimizes power and efficiency. So, the resulting engine is 'in spec', but in a way that a random conglomeration of manufacturing tolerances would never produce.... unless you got a one-in-a-million engine.

Re: Blueprinted??

As 12secondSy and turbodog wrote are both correct. Blueprinting is combining the predetermined specs and final product tolerances of an engine and recording them as the engine is built. This is one way an engine builder can guarantee the customer and themselves that a proven combonation can be duplicated over and over. (alot like CNC porting of heads) It is also a great way to have a record of you engine so if you have problems down the road you can look back at what was done or for resale of the engine. We go as far as recording vital engine part numbers and balance specs on a computerized blueprint sheet so I always have a copy, so if an engine is coming back for more work, refreshing, or repair I know what's inside before it gets here and I can order part ahead of time.

Hope that wasn't to long winded.:blah:

Re: Blueprinted??

Just to add to what turbodog said it also includes measuring and correcting any differences between critical dimensions of various components. An example would be checking and correcting any diff in deck height down to .0005" (for us anal people ;) ), indexing the crank, equalizing installed valve height, equalizing combustion chamber volume, etc etc as well as documenting all of these measurements.

Among gear heads you will hear the word "blue print" thrown around a lot when in actuality they think that it pertains to just having machine work done like boring and honing when in fact no amount of extensive measurment taking, correcting, or recording ever took place...just machine work.

If you have an engine "blue printed" the builder/machinist should be able to hand you a piece of paper with a long list of measurments that were checked and corrected if needed. If he/she cant then the engine wasnt blue printed...period.

Re: Blueprinted??

There's a section in the book, Turbocharging, Supercharging, and Nitrous Oxide about blueprinting. It said that a Ford engineer took a stock Mustang motor, and blueprinted it with tighter tolerances. Without changing any parts (just blueprinting) the motor gained 12hp. That should tell you how much power can be lost with wasted motion in the rotating assembly.
