Boost Valve Question

are you guys that are close to stock -( ie: k&n filter, intercooler pipe, no chip, stock turbo etc)....using the stock boost controller or using a manual boost valve?

my typhoon is all that, but the previous owner added a man boost valve, i posted a question before about a lot of noise at full throttle when the truck was set to 15psi.....in reading the previous posts, learning that the factory wastegate is set for 8-9psi, i think thats what the noise was..overboosting?....what is the cheap/ proper fix?....

...go back to the factory boost valve until I do the fuel/ign/computer mods?.....or change/adjust The wastegate?

IMHO, on a stock motor, stick with the stock boost valve. Mainly because if you don't have a chip and a 3 bar MAP anything over 13-14 lbs is gonna hurt the motor because the the stock 2 bar MAP can't read above 14lbs. Also I'd suggest installing a "real" boost/vac gauge because the factory gauge is unreliable. The noise might be allot of different things but if it comes on gradually as boost builds I'd suggest a pressure leak in the plumbing (hoses) between the turbo and the throttle body as-well-as or in addition to a vac leak. Manual bost controller on stock turbo/wastegate equal boost spikes. If you trying for 14-15 psi I can almost guarentee you hearing audible pinging. The stock boost control use feedback (ie measurements from the map sensor) to constantly adjust the wastegate to help keep the turbo from overboosting.

When my truck was stock I used a greddy profec and loved it. I had way solid control and the truck picked up a few tenths.

It was likely very loud detonation, and *will* result in a dead motor if it isn't already on the way down.

Go back to the stock chip, and boost solenoid until you're sure things are running well.
You'll need a scan tool of some variety to verify "running well".

The factory wastegate is rated at 8-9psi but with the stock boost solenoid you will get up 14 psi. With 14psi on 93 octain you shouldn't detonate unless you need a tune up.
When last you replace spark plugs, cap and wires?
You really need a scan tool , check boost and knockretard, etc.

I took out the manual boost valve, it seems to run better now. It definately isnt knocking, or anything like that, it sounds like a huge rush of air when RPMs increase past half throttle closer to wide open, seems to stop pulling as hard as it does when I accelerate using just half throttle. makes way more noise than it goes type of situation.... new vacuum lines installed before i bought truck and all look ok.

any other ideas?

just ordered all new ign/ fuel stuff from RPM today, so i will be installing all that next week, but for now, all is stock except K&N, and intercooler pipe.

I must say, I've never been a member of a forum before, specialty vehicles need this type of communication......even when I had My '95 hummer wagon ( what a pile that was!).....

I am very thankful for everyone responding, it seems to make the learning curve for syty's way easier.

as i said in the previous post, everything pretty much back to stock.....went to fill up with 93 pump gas, then when I was leaving I got on it, at the top of second gear, the truck cut out, nose dove down and check engine light came on. I let off...check engine light went out, now it doesnt seem to have quite as much power....any ideas? did it overboost?

I was leaving I got on it, at the top of second gear, the truck cut out, nose dove down and check engine light came on. I let off...check engine light went out, now it doesnt seem to have quite as much power....any ideas? did it overboost?

it's overboost... very common when you up the boost or hack up the exhuast with a stock turbo still in the truck.. keep your foot out of it or you'll be selling the truck for 4k in a month as a roller... that nose dive and check engine light is the trucks only way of helping to prevent you from blowing it to shit.. lower your boost via adjusting the wastegate rod on the turbo.. then get yourself a real boost gauge(stock in dash sucks balls) then go from there.. with a stock chip you'll get the CEL each time you go over the 14.5psi of boost it was programmed to handle fueling for.

If I had to guess, you have the original vacuums and they aren't sealing causing overboost.

keep in mind the computer pulls timing (or atleast should) so you may never actually hear the detonation even though the motor is getting the $hit beat out of it. On many trucks, it can take upwards of 12 deg of retarded timing before you actually hear a pinging noise. Add a quality boost gauge, and a scan tool to your MUST have list! The tuneup is a great start, but you need some concrete data to know if the motor is overboosting, blowing out the spark or going lean.
