boost

ok guys so its winter here. i got my truck all set for my boost contoler. so i took it out for a drive, and i set it for like the lowest boost. i dont really know what i had it set for cuz it is a manual boost controler. but i would think it had to be somewhere around 5 lbs. so i go and i just slam on the gas when i'm driving and i still get full boost.. my brother told me to turn the controler up a little bit more, so i did and i figure its at like 10 lbs.. but i still got full boost.. and i was told to try and reset my waste gate and that will set my boost lower.. but i wanna know why my boost controler didn't work. and if i reset the wastegate and that lowers my bost.. then whats my controler gonna do? this is a stock engine..

Re: boost

Your lowest boost will still be determined by your wastegate spring
If it's stock it will be around 7 to 8 lbs and could read as high as 10 lbs
with the stock boost guage. Also did you disconnect the wastegate solinoid ?
If not it could still be affecting the amout of boost you are getting

well in the saudi they dont have a stock boost guage. so i'm useing an autometer(phantom) and yes in order to use boost controler, don't you have to disconnect the wastegate solinoid?.. i have the wire on the truck yet, but i did take the solinoid out..

Re: boost

ok lets go over this...... the wastegate, down bwlow the turbo (looks like a cat food can with a rod coming out of it)
there should be a vacccuum hose coming of of it, going to the stock boost selinoid (little black thing on top of the turbo.) disconnect the stock boost selinoid, and take it completely out of the loop.

from the wastegate (gold colored)...connect vac hose to one side of the man. boost controller.
other side to the little nipple on the turbo itself (vac. hose inbetween) bam...done.
turn up or down slowly in small increments to see if boost increses.

base boost is 8 lbs, you should be able to get it up to 20 psi with a standard boost controller.

you do have a 3 bar map sensor and a chip correct?????

if not the computer cant compensate above 14.7 psi with fuel, so beware.............

Re: boost

IMO forget the manual boost controller on stock motor.

1- If its a 2bar MAP sensor it won't fuel over 15 psi.
2- The stock turbo wastegate is under sized. With a manual boost controller no ability to compensate with feedback from the MAP sensor it will spike and overboost.

For your problem most likely the rod wastegate actuator is set too tight, or your vacuum lines aren't full sealed (please don't reuse the orignals.), or the wastegate puck is sticky or the wastegate actuator is diaphram is leaking.

no there is no chip or 3bar map.. i just have it all stock and the solinoid is completely gone. i know it will only run up to about 14.5lbs for the stock without the 3bar or the chip.. i dont mind that for now..untill i get more money for more mods

what your saying here is what my friend told me, with the rod wategate actuator being set to high, that it can still over boost.. i didn't get a chance to loosen the nut on that.. but when i do get to loosen the nut up. How will the boost controler take in affect if i'm just lowering the boost with the rod actuator? or will the boost controler, take over thebase boost and keep the wastegate shut untill it hits the boost that the controler is set for? therefore Taking over the wastegate and overcoming what the wastegate rod is set for?

Re: boost

is this right? that the controler takes over once the psi hits the base, off the rod wastegate?

The wastegate actuator will open at a certain psi, on a stock actuator adjusted to the correct length, it is 8-9psi. To attain boost higher than base boost, the solenoid/boost controller bleeds off boost to the actuator to delay the opening of the actuator.

Re: boost

okay.. i will hve to try it next time at by my truck.. and re adjust that and see what happens. thanks for help :)

Re: boost

well i went outside today.. backed out the nut on the actuator rod.. and it still got full boost.. when i got home i went to look at it again.. and it was Gone.. the piece that was missing, is what the Pin was holding back from falling off.. so i take it my pin must have fell off somehow.? and now i'm missing that. and the nut.. so anyone know were i can find that thing that the pin was holdeing on?

Re: boost

or is there a way i can just put a external wastegate on the stock turbo? if i can't find that piece that i'm missing?

i see a motor going boom very soon

i dont like that fact that you accuse someone of gonna blow up a motor.? how can you say that when you dont even know how i drive or anything?? i think thats rude. and it wont blowcuz i'm not driving it anymore, untill i find that piece or get something to work with it. anyone know what this piece is even called.?? or is there a way to put a new internal/external wastegate on the stock turbo? that way it Dont overboost..

Re: boost

Loosening the nut doesn't controller the boost. It just keeps the rods end from unscrewing. You typically take the clip off the wasterage puck arm, loosen the nut, remove the actuator arm, spin the rod end to desired length, reconnect the actuator arm to wastegate puck, tighen nut and then reattach the clip.

It sounds you didn't tighten the waste actuator and didn't have the clip on wastegate puck, it actuator arm fell off and then rod end sloing lspun off and fell on the ground.

Re: boost

well i found the thing that i thought was missing.. the rod is sticking out of the actuator.. so the only thing ii'm missing now is the nut. witch i can get out of my garage.. so i will try this again.. thanks for more info on this.. :)

Re: boost

Your missing parts. Your missing the rod end, nut and clip the attaches it to the lever is the pin sticking out. You can see it a the top of this picture.

Your truck must be really slow without that connected. It probably make little to no boost.

actually on my autometer boost guage it says i'm making full boost...

but i can pull the rod out.. so thats why i dont understand.:dunno:

The wastegate puck must be stuck.
