Brake mod Questions?

Lately I have been looking into upgrading my front brakes. I have decided to go with powerstop cross-drilled rotors. I'm still deciding on pads but looking into EBC 4x4 6000 series pads if thet are available for our trucks. My questions are can I go with a larger rotor and keep my stock wheels, also if I get a large rotor do I need to make changes to the stock calipers. Also is there anything I'm not thinking of that would need to be done. If any one has any ideas about pads I'm still open. Thanks Nate

If it was possible to find larger rotors (diameter) that were no thicker than stock (so the calipers could be reused) then they still arent going to do any good. You'll have a big rotor, but you wont have larger pads in the calipers to take advantage of the increased surface area of the rotor. In fact, the useable area of the stock pads may decrease as you've changed outer curvature of the rotor with the increase in diameter.

As far as front brakes go I havent heard of any upgrade method short of the Baers or Wilwoods. On the rear, however, some forum members are finding cheaper, innovative alternatives to the pricey big brake kits.

There is a kit for either Corvettes or F-bodies (both?) that has bigger rotors and a spacer that mounts the caliper out further away from the center of the wheel. This does help, due to increased "sweep area". It's basically just leverage stuff, with the center of the axle being the fulcrum. Just look at the circumference of the rotor, and think about how much distance is covered in one revolution of the wheel.

3.14x12" = 37.68" of sweep
3.14x13" = 40.82" of sweep

But like Methuselah said, the shape of the pads and stuff like that may affect the overall results.

This didnt even occur to me. I apologize for my inaccuracy.

When I first read the thread about that kit, I didn't get it either (like most of the people). Then after they explained it like that, it all made sense.

Seems like a lot of work and fudging stuff to make it work a little better though. Personally I'd rather get a real upgraded kit, especially if I had my own money tree...

Well, see, the cool thing about this is that you kind of do. Once your truck is paid off you have a new source of equity that you can use for secured loans at low automotive loan rates.
