c5 Brakes

Anyone done this yet, was thinking of buying for the front and since they are so cheap from gmpartsdirect.

I saw some partnumbers on this site.
http://home.earthlink.net/~kiszka/C5_brake_upgrade.htm

So all I would need is the brakes and rotors from above. And then Order this kit from this site.
http://www.cbrperformance.com/c5_kit.htm

So total for the kit would be

2 rotors =80$
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&partnumber=88926732

2 calipers=200$
88895129

1 brake pad kit=100$
88952008

Cbr kit= 200$
http://www.cbrperformance.com/c5_kit.htm

So around 650$ shipped for everything with brand new parts.
If there is a better kit then this let me know please.
Thanks David.

Re: c5 Brakes

Nice post David. (adds parts to personal list). I don't know much about vettes, so excuse this. The Z06 calipers are the same as the C5 but only red? I didn't see a big difference at all besides color. Especially since the rotor size is the same. Black truck needs black calipers for me.

Re: c5 Brakes

Those rotors probalbly don't include the brackets, bolts, rubber grommets, etc etc.

Just watch what it all includes, as it may be a few more nickels, dimes than you think by buying new from gm parts direct. BTDT.

Re: c5 Brakes

Im gonna see If I can borrow some 17' Gto rims for a while, yeah a while.
And yes I do know that you NEED 17' RIMS TO CLEAR 13' ROTORS.

I did the "F-Body Kit" from CBR this weekend. It fits the 16" Stock Rims. It took me 2 days.

PICTURES HERE: http://www.northeastsyty.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Brakes

The picture will show you what has to be cut on the spindles to fit the brackets.
Wow!! Your pictures are fantastic, to say the least. That will be a huge help for me, I've got the CBR kit in my hands but just haven't had the time to install it. I beleive your estimate of 2 days. (When I did the PTE kit I encountered some people who said it took them 1-2 hours, it took me about 40 with all the associated modifications to the truck that were actually required).

My only question is, won't your smaller spare tire cause a problem with the full time all wheel drive? I thought that was the reason GM had a full size spare to begin with. :dunno:

Re: c5 Brakes

TookyCat,
You are right they should be the same size (circumference). That would make the diff work hard. But, I don't plan to go far if I do get a flat. My truck is in no way a daily driver. I would call a flat bed for any distance if the need would come up. But the stock spare is useless to me now. I will keep an eye out - looking for one that has the same circumference. If one exists? I bought this one cheap on ebay. WOW! - I really never gave it any thought....but thanks for pointing that out!

Re: c5 Brakes

when you do the c5 kit watch your wheel offset, and some 17s wont fit I have 18s that barely clear the calliper.

Re: c5 Brakes

Vette 17 x 8.5 will not fit. need to go with at least a 9" wheel. I have a # for a guy in florida that can sell you a complete ZO6 caliper with the mounting bracket and pads. I'll post later with it. Mine will stop on a dime. Get the red they stand out really well with the GS vette wheels.

Yes they are the same just in RED.

Re: c5 Brakes

I saw huge calipers on a new Cadillac CTS-V yesterday. They are huge but look AWESOME. I know it is also GM and maybe the same as the Vette. Anyone??

I did the C5 converstion and I really love it. So much better than stock brakes. Did the ABS delete at the same time.

You're not goining anywhere with the stock spare and 13" rotors, the stock spare won't even fit on your truck with that big of break calipers on it. Only way is if you have a 17" spare. Just thought I would bring this up as most buy bigger brakes with out thinking about being able to use their spare.

Re: c5 Brakes

If I am correct (which sometimes happens) the new GTO comes with a 17" space-saver spare.... Something to consider (saw one on ebay recently).

Obviously, it wouldn't be good for long distances or high speeds (transfer case & diffs would complain) but if you read the markings on the tire, most all of them say max 50 miles and 50 mph (or so). But would probably be ok for local driving.

:eh:

I'm kinda dumb when it comes to these things, so I don't get it. Why would the calipers clear the 17x9's, but not the 17x8.5's? It's obviously not an issue with the caliper hitting the inside diameter of the wheel, since they both should be the same. It must be an issue of the caliper hitting the spokes?? I have aftermarket 17x8.5 Z06's all the way around, with 3/8" wheel spacers on the front (with longer studs just to be safe). Oh man...if I can't use the C5 kit, I'm gonna :shoot:. Getting bigger brakes was one of the primary reasons I got 17's in the first place. So what's the size of the rotors in the Brembo kit that some people go for? Will they clear a 17x8.5?

You know when you can feel yourself getting upset? :banghead:

Re: c5 Brakes

I jst finished the 13s if you want pics I went with the ls1 caliper for the larger piston and the powerslot rotors.

Re: c5 Brakes

I cut the wires and trashed them. I never carried the spare anyway after installing the ZR1's. I carry a plug kit and a small 12V compressor. If that will not get me to where I need to go, I'll call a roll back.
