I have a 91 syclone and I have managed to screw up the key that takes off the center caps. The key looks like a Triangle with a bump on all three sides can anybody tell if this is the stock one for the truck, The truck only has 18,000 miles on it and I was the one who took the stock firestones SVX off of it can abody telll me if I have the stock key and since I screwed it up does anybody know a part # or what I can do to try and get the lokcs out? Has this happened to anyone and do they know if they make something to take them out with out screwing up the center cap.

That sounds like the stock key.

I had a similiar problem with one of my wheels. Try an easy out on the bolt, but be careful.

On my truck, the bolt was seized and wouldn't budge. I tried an easy out to drill out the bolt and that did not work. I snapped the damn easy out in the bolt.

I ended up having to drill out the metal of the center cap that surrounded the bolt. Then I removed the center cap. After that, I used a set of vice grip's to remove the bolt from the wheel.

Also, The threads got stripped out so I had to retap the wheel and buy a new center cap & bolt.

Re: Can anybody help me with a center cap problem

I ordered a lock for my typhoon. There are a bunch of different keys. My sy & ty have different patterens. I was lucky in that my Ty still had a sticker on the key with the code still on it. I think the original owner could have registered the key with McGuard when they bought the truck new, so McGuard may have your key code listed with your truck VIN.

Same problem here, I was putting 4 donuts spares on for winter storage (gonna do something with the stockers, but I'm not sure what) all but the left rear came off fine. It will tighten but loosening is a different story. The local GMC dealer is going to give it a go today I'll let you know how it turns out.
I really don't want to drill this thing out.
Damn this sucks.

They will sometimes loosen up if you use a medium sized center punch and a heavy hammer. Smack the center of the bolt sharply and then try the wrench.

McMaster Carr sells replacement SS allen head cap screws (10mm x ?? long). If you send all of your old bolts and the wrench back to McGard, they will replace everything at no charge.

They did mine a few months ago.

Two hours and four dull drill bits later and the *&#$^&%#$ thing still won't budge.

I tried the punch and hammer along with pounding a socket on it, a little heat didn't help, and neither did swearing and standing around in 20% weather drinking beer looking at it.

Dealer wants $122.00 for the wrench and new bolts, but I'm not sure the 12 year behind the parts counter even knows what a Jimmy is let alone a TY.

The only thing I can see happening is destroying the centercap and trying to find a new one.

Maybe I'll just get the Firebird takeoff tires and wheels SLP sells and let these set in the garage for awhile.

Anyone want to sell just one centercap? What a PITA.
