Im talking rear diffs ya buncha pervies..

A thread came up the other day about diff bolt in 10 bolts. Someone mentioned that the newer S trucks with the HO V6 had a 8.5inch rear diff. Is that true??

A bud of mine has a 2wd extreme with the "enhanced" 4.3 but the diff looks like any other 7.5 or 7 5/8 rear Ive seen..

Can someone confirm or deny that you can actually find a 8.5 in a later S truck that was put there by the factory??

TIA..

myclone,

I can't answer your first question but I too was thinking the BB was a little on the sluggish side. I tried from my dial-up line, LAn connection and a server - all yielding the samething.

Back to the Xtreme - there was something brought up in the SyTy vs Spark debate on the nloc board. The Xtreme owner said he had a 5-speed behind a 4.3. I have never heard of a 4.3 getting the 5-speed. I also asked when I was looking at an Xtreme and the dealer (not that it matters) told me I couldn't get a 4.3 w/5-speed. Just wondering who is full of sh!t.

Dave--

I was looking into buying an extreme, and you can "order" a 4.3 with a 5-speed. I have never seen one on a lot with that configuration though.

After thinking about it the 5-speed in the S-Series isn't the fastest shifting transmission I have seen. I am sure numbers with a decent auto would prolly be about the same. In retrospect I probably would have ordered the auto - but who knows. Thanks for clarifying for me.

What enhanced engine? Are they making more than 1 variant of the 4.3 for the S-10?

Last time I checked, which was the 2000 model year, If you ordered a s-10 w/ the 4.3 and an auto tranny, they gave you the 200HP engine. If you wanted the 5 speed, you got stuck w/ the 190HP version. So not much difference, but that was all I needed to hear. I went for the extra 10 ponies.

I beleive all regular s10's still have the 7.5 or 7 5/8" rear ends, WITH THE EXCEPTION of the ZR2 off road package, I have heard that they have the 8.5" in them...

FWIW, I have a friend with an Xtreme with the 4.3 and a 5 speed, he does pretty well for himself (considering the vehicle), he runs very low 15s with the minor bolt ons like underdrive pulleys and exhaust.

Back to myclones original question. Yes the factory did produce an 8.5 rear diff in the s-10's.

I'm not 100% sure about what you had to order to get one, but I think in 2wd you had to order the 4.3, 5 speed, and zq8 suspension.

Also i'm sure all zr2 4wd trucks have the 8.5 as well.

Nolan knows for sure, he installed an 8.5 in his synoma.
